My name is Eleni, and Ι was born and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece. After completing my undergraduate degree in History and Archeology in the University of Thessaly, I spent two wonderful years in London, on my Master's degrees (MA in Cultural Studies; MA in History of Film and Visual Media). Soon after completing my UK adventure, I decided to return to my hometown, Thessaloniki, which, however, not only was I now missing dearly, but whose history, culture, and beauty I had begun to re-appreciate. My new founded love for this city and its treasures is what really turned me into a Tour Guide. Although I was not fully aware of it in the beginning, I have always loved meeting new people with whom I can explore and discuss sites, edifices, special places and artefacts, travelling both in space and also in time. Through the eyes of my guests, I discover something new about all of them; and, most significantly, each time, I discover something new about the human condition. For the last ten years, I have also been the founder of my own art website, where I mostly work as a literary editor, - literature is my other passion- so, I am always building my tours around literary texts and period primary sources. What I love the most about my city, except from its wonderful waterfront, is its multicultural and turbulent past and present, reflected in the writings of many different authors, historians, politicians, poets, and first-hand witnesses of history. Although not well-known, the locality of Thessaloniki has a very long and convoluted history spanning more than 2. 500 years of continuous habitation. The city was founded around 315 BC by King Cassander of Macedon, on or near the site of the ancient town of Therma and 26 other local villages. He named it after his wife Thessalonike, a half-sister of Alexander the Great and princess of Macedonia as daughter of Philip II. Since then it flourished and grew powerful but also suffered many disasters and traumas, only to keep rising again and again from its own ashes. One of the most important cities of the macedonian kingdom, during the roman years, it became a crucial administrative and cultural urban centre for Rome; in the Byzantine era, the city was known as the Symvasilevousa, (coreighning city) along with Constantinople, the glorious capital in the East. Even under the ottoman rule, which almost lasted 500 years, Thessaloniki never ceased to amaze visitors with its beauty, multicultural character, sophistication and thriving commercial life. What is most important for me as a host, is to help visitors discover and embrace both Thessaloniki's mysterious past and its friendly vibrant present: to admire its magnificent monuments and works of art through learning about them, and to experience its multicultural and creative atmosphere through a lively adventure. Please, feel free to select any of my set tours, or, if you prefer, I can tailor a tour to your particular interests: History, Art, Food, Culture, Nature, and everything in between. What is certain is that I will do my best to provide you with an unforgettable and enriching travelling experience in Greece. Overview of your Thessaloniki tour

This set tour starts at the Trigonion Tower in the Upper Town. From there, we can take in the majestic view of the city and the byzantine walls, and reflect briefly upon the history of the city. Then, we will visit the 5th c. Moni Latomou, where we will be admiring one of the most important early Christian mosaic. We will stroll around the maze of the upper town, the most picturesque area of the city, discovering some hidden stories. Then, we will visit the church of St Demetrius, the patron saint of the city, we will see the Roman Forum, and the city's public markets. Upon arriving at the 4th c. Rotonda we will experience first hand the passage of time in the use of this unique building. We will then stop at a famous landmark and favourite meeting place today, the 300 AD Arch of Galerius, and follow the path around the rich remnants of the glorious palace complex built by Roman emperor Galerius in the early 4th century. Our tour will be completed at the White Tower, the most iconic monument of the city.

Eleni was a very well-informed, thoughtful and personable tour guide. We learned a lot about Thessaloniki and enjoyed her presentation. She was comfortable adjusting her approach, her itinerary as we asked questions. Eleni has a gracious manner, a sensitivity to her customers' needs, and is very knowledgeable.

Our guide, Ms. Eleni, was excellent. She paced herself well, showed deep knowledge of everything related to Thessaloniki, and put all this knowledge in context. Although this was a 4.5 hour waling tour, no fatigue was felt, I suppose that says everything!

Eleni, our tour guide, met us at our hotel. From the start, she was engaging, and very knowledgeable. We started our trek high up overlooking the city, and slowly me entered our way down, stopping along the way at various sites she gave us the history, and the importance of each of these sites. The pace of the tour was steady. There were areas of many steps, and we had to take it slow. Elena was able to answer all of our questions, and was patient with us as we tried to wrap our brain around the complex history of the area. We finish promptly at the white tower, and Elaine gave us suggestions for places to get coffee or potentially a meal. If I were to return to the Nickie, I would surely want to do another tour of the city with Eleni.

Eleni M was a great guide. She connected with us in advance to ask what we would like to see. She focused on the special interests we had while making sure we saw the most important historical sites of Thessaloniki. She is very knowledgeable about the history of the city. She was prepared with photos of ancient frescoes or mosaics that are hard to see because they are elevated in height. Eleni is also personable. We enjoyed her company. We were 3 physically active elders and she was patient with our need to sometimes walk carefully on rock or cobblestone streets. We had a great day in Thessaloniki , saw the best the city has to offer. (It is also a very pleasant city, right on the Sea. We enjoyed being there much more than we anticipated.) We highly recommend Eleni M. and thank her for making our visit so meaningful!

Your Thessaloniki tour itinerary
