Explore Volos your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Volos tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Volos for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Trek classic Mount Pelion paths between Makrinitsa and Portaria while your guide points out wild herbs, then shift to the Lake Karla wetlands to watch herons and flamingos from hides. In summer, you can paddle a sea kayak in the Pagasetic Gulf near Afissos, or take a private boat day tour toward the Alonissos Marine Park to look for dolphins.

History tours: Step inside the Neolithic sites of Sesklo and Dimini and connect the finds at the Athanasakeion Archaeological Museum of Volos with what you saw in the field. You can also ride the vintage Pelion railway from Ano Lechonia to Milies to see stone mansions and the Church of the Taxiarchon, with time to wander the old Kastro walls back in town.

Food and Drink tours: Sit down at a string of tsipourádika along Argonavtón Street to pair local tsipouro with small seafood plates like grilled octopus, fried anchovies, and tyrokafteri. You can also meet a winemaker in nearby Néa Anchialos for tastings and stop in a Pelion village kitchen to learn how spoon sweets or pita are made.

The waterfront and centre are walkable, and local buses link the port with nearby neighbourhoods and Pelion villages, though service can be limited in the evening or on weekends. For spread-out places like Lake Karla, wineries, or remote beaches, you can book chauffeured tours or ask your local guide about tours with private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Volos inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Volos

Use Volos as your home base, then branch out to nearby villages, islands, and a UNESCO site with easy day trips and flexible tours that keep your schedule light.

- Pelion villages (Makrinitsa, Portaria, Tsagarada): stone lanes, balcony views over the Pagasetic Gulf, and shady squares make a simple wander feel rewarding, and you can pair short forest walks with a swim at Aegean-side beaches like Mylopotamos or Damouchari, so it suits hikers, food lovers, and beach fans in the same day.

- Meteora (Kalabaka): gravity-defying monasteries perched on rock pillars, panoramic lookouts, and light trails give you history and scenery in one place, and it fits photographers, culture seekers, and anyone who wants a memorable landscape without a long hike.

- Skiathos or Skopelos by boat: a smooth crossing puts you on pine-fringed beaches with clear water for swimming and snorkelling, and your tour can focus on quiet coves or lively harbour towns, which works well for families, swimmers, and laid-back explorers.

- Ancient Dion and Mount Olympus foothills: wander an archaeological park with mosaics, theatres, and a solid museum, then add a gentle gorge walk near the lower slopes, so history fans and casual walkers both get what they like in one trip.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Volos most travellers miss.
