Five off the beaten track destinations in London

Today we welcome local guide Nigel in London as he shares his favourite off the beaten track destinations to explore with visitors. I am a London based tour guide offering a range guiding experiences across the city and beyond. As a former teacher of History, I have a real passion for that subject and most of my tours include stories from London’s remarkable 2000 year-old past. As a guide I love meeting travellers of all ages from around the world and sharing my knowledge and understanding of the culture, history and the humour of Britain. Five Off the Beaten Track Places to Explore in London CHARTWELL Chartwell was the family home of Sir Winston Churchill. This special place is off the beaten track and although set in the depths of the English countryside it is easily accessible, situated only 25 miles from central London. The house itself has been carefully preserved by the National Trust and contains many of Churchill’s possessions, including the largest single collection of his art work to be found anywhere. The gardens are also unique and provide an insight into his home life and his many hobbies that he pursued at different times in his life. Whether you are fascinated by Churchill or simply would like to escape the crowds of London and see some countryside, a trip to Chartwell will provide many happy memories. THE ROMAN TEMPLE OF MITHRAS Situated under the impressive 21st century headquarters of Bloomberg, this ancient temple is one of the most surprising ‘off the beaten track’ places to visit in the City of London. On show is a huge selection of Roman artefacts found on the site during the recent excavation and, as part of the visit, there is a short but entertaining audio re-enactment of a typical ceremony conducted during the period. If you are interested in London’s history and want an insight into what lies below the streets of London then this place ticks all those boxes. THE OLD CHESHIRE CHEESE PUB This is one of a number of pubs that survived the Great Fire of London in 1666 and is one of of the many inns and pubs that we visit on my London Historic Pubs tour. The dark, mysterious and cosy rooms have stories to tell and many literary figures like Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are said to have been ‘regulars’ at this establishment. The main bar is the home to a sadly deceased parrot called Polly. When it died, in 1926, around 200 newspapers across the world wrote obituaries. The beer and food are also excellent! VICTORIA EMBANKMENT GARDENS These beautiful gardens are tucked away along the banks of the River Thames providing a haven of peace and quiet just a short distance away from the bustling streets of London’s Theatreland. They were opened in 1865 as reclaimed land and were considered to be the finest thoroughfare in Europe. In addition to the statues and war memorials there are many stories to tell about the reconstruction of this area of the city and the characters and places that we pass as we walk its length from Embankment Tube Station up to the edge of the old City of London. ALL HALLOWS BY THE TOWER This remarkable church situated just a stone’s throw from the Tower of London is the oldest church in the City of London and was founded in 675AD. It survived the Great Fire of London but was badly damaged during the Blitz of 1940. This event revealed a Roman archway and in its crypt can be found a huge range of historical artefacts, some of which have American links. This church is full of surprises and if you have an interest In London’s sea trading history there are many references to this around the building. There is also the crows nest from Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, The Quest. Very few people visit All Hallows and yet it is easy to access and is one of London’s true gems. Planning to explore London in 2025? You can start a conversation with local guide Nigel to come up with the perfect itinerary for you and your travel companions.

Top Destinations for 2025

As we step into 2025, the world of travel is calling us with new adventures, destinations, and unique experiences. Are you dreaming of vibrant city escapes, incredible landscapes, cultural experiences, hidden gems off the beaten path... or maybe a destination that captures all of this and more? The year ahead promises something special for every traveller. In this list, we’re uncovering the top 10 trending destinations at ToursByLocals based on our booking data so far for 2025—places that blend culture, adventure, and unforgettable moments. Top Travel Destinations for 2025 Tokyo Ever since ToursByLocals’ inception in 2008, Tokyo has been an extremely in-demand destination, regularly occupying a spot in our top five most popular places to book a tour. After nearly 3 years of pandemic shut-down, tourism to Japan roared back in 2023 and 2024, making the most popular destinations in the world for ToursByLocals travellers. There are direct flights to Tokyo from all over, with more routes popping up all the time. The city offers a seemingly unlimited choice of shopping, entertainment, culture and food adventures to locals and travellers alike. The city's history can be appreciated in districts such as Asakusa and in many excellent museums, historic temples and gardens. And it’s not all skyscrapers, glass and concrete; Tokyo also offers a number of lovely and calm green spaces in the city center and within relatively short train rides at its outskirts. We have a feeling that sakura (cherry blossom) season is going to be particularly popular this year, so if you’re travelling to Tokyo in the springtime, you’ll want to book tours very soon. Rome No surprise to see Rome sitting right near the top of the list! The Italian capital city will always be a firm favourite, along with Italy's other star destinations, like Venice, Florence, Amalfi, Tuscany...too many to name! The Eternal City has a way of sweeping travellers off their feet with its perfect mix of ancient wonders and lively charm. And this year is Rome’s Jubilee year, so there will be even more going on! Imagine walking through history at the Colosseum, Roman Forum, or Pantheon, where stories of gladiators and emperors come to life. Then, step into the Vatican City to marvel at the breathtaking beauty of St. Peter’s Basilica and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling. Of course Rome isn’t just about its famous landmarks—take a leisurely stroll through the cobblestoned streets of Trastevere, grab a scoop of gelato, and soak up the warm glow of its piazzas. End your day by tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain, sealing your promise to return to this enchanting city. Kyoto Boasting 17 World Heritage sites and a stunning array of Buddhist temples and Shintō shrines, Kyoto is a treasure house of Japanese history and culture. But while this ancient city is one of the world's most culturally rich places, its true beauty can sometimes lie hidden behind modern facades. When you take a Kyoto tour with a knowledgeable local guide, you’ll discover the “real' Kyoto - the Kyoto of your dreams. Walk with your guide around Old Kyoto, through winding alleys lined with traditional narrow wooden houses. In Gion Corner you can experience dance performances by apprentice geisha, and learn about the traditional Japanese arts of puppetry and flower arranging. Your guide will want you to see Kinkaju, the shimmering Golden Pavillion, and the beautiful Kiyomizu Temple - especially during the spring Cherry Blossom season. As in Tokyo, we expect spring time to be a particularly busy season for visiting Japan in 2025, so if you’re hoping to go at cherry blossom time, book your guide soon! These tours sold out last year. Paris 2024 brought the Olympics to Paris, and 2025 brings something potentially greater for tourism: the re-opening of Notre Dame cathedral, 5 years after a fire destroyed much of the iconic Gothic cathedral. The cathedral re-opened its doors to the public in mid-December, and local guides are thrilled to once again be able to incorporate visits to Notre Dame in their tour itineraries. After a visit to Notre Dame, stroll through the nearby historic Marais district, where cobblestoned streets lead to boutique shops, art galleries, and the stunning Place des Vosges. Admire world-class art at the Musée d’Orsay, housed in a former Beaux-Arts railway station, or discover the whimsical architecture and gardens of Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, with its remarkable view of Sacre Coeur. For a taste of Parisian elegance, explore the boutiques along the Champs-Élysées or people-watch with a café crème in hand at a sidewalk café in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Don’t miss a climb up the Sacré-Cœur Basilica for breathtaking views of the city, followed by a wander through the bohemian streets of Montmartre. Feet tired? A sunset cruise along the Seine River at the end of the day is pure magic, offering a fresh perspective on the City of Light. Be sure to also check out these fabulous day trips from Paris, when you’re ready to explore other French delights beyond the city. Singapore Singapore is the third Asian city in our top five for 2025 - a first! Singapore is a city where cultures meet, flavours collide, and innovation thrives—all wrapped in a lush, warmly tropical setting. Start your journey at Marina Bay Sands, where the city skyline dazzles, then wander through the stunning Gardens by the Bay, home to futuristic Supertrees and tranquil flower domes. Dive into the rich history of Chinatown or Little India, where colourful streets and aromatic food stalls invite you to explore…and taste! Savour Singapore’s world-famous hawker food—don’t miss the chilli crab, fragrant creamy laksa noodles or Hainanese chicken rice. As evening falls, stroll along Clarke Quay or catch the light and water show at Marina Bay. Singapore’s unique blend of tradition and modernity promises an unforgettable trip! London London is always going to be a place that beckons people who love everything from hidden Roman history to Victorian literature, to a cozy pint in a centuries-old pub where Shakespeare once sat. It’s a city that tells stories around every corner, especially if you explore it with a local guide. It’s also our duty to remind you that England is so much more than just London, and as a small country with an excellent rail system, it’s very easy to explore beyond the capital. Local guides have a fabulous roster of day tours that take you out of the city and into the towns, villages, coast and countryside England is famous for. Bath, Oxford, Stonehenge, Dover, Salisbury, Cambridge… north, south, east or west, you’ll find a day’s adventure waiting for you! Barcelona Barcelona has long been a fan favourite among ToursByLocals travellers. With its warm climate, coastal breezes, and incredible food and drink, this fascinating city is also incredibly fun. Much of Barcelona's charm lies in Gaudí's fantastical structures like Sagrada Família and Park Güell. You can wander the historic Gothic Quarter, feel the buzz of La Rambla, and dive into tapas heaven at La Boqueria market. Relax on sunny beaches or explore art at the Picasso Museum and Joan Miró Foundation. Barcelona's mix of history, art, delicious food, and vibrant energy welcomes travellers of all kinds! Its temperate climate makes it a lovely place to go when much of Europe is still feeling the chill of late winter. If you’re planning a trip here, we recommend taking some time to step away from the crowds in the city with a daytrip to the other parts of Catalonia. Explore the medieval villages of Tavertet and Rupit, where scenic cliffs and rustic architecture create a tranquil retreat, or walk the less crowded trails around Montserrat Monastery to enjoy stunning views of unique rock formations. For nature lovers, Delta del Ebro Natural Park offers serene beaches, birdwatching, and cycling paths far from the city’s bustle. History and culture enthusiasts can visit Vic, a small city with a charming old town and vibrant weekly market, or head to Sant Sadurní d'Anoia to tour family-run wineries and savour the slower pace of Catalonia’s wine country. Athens Athens offers an unparalleled mix of ancient history and modern vibrancy. Begin your journey at the Acropolis, home to the Parthenon and breathtaking views of the city, then explore the Acropolis Museum to delve deeper into its storied past. Stroll through the historic Plaka neighbourhood with its charming narrow streets, neoclassical architecture, and inviting tavernas. Discover the lively Monastiraki district, perfect for shopping at eclectic markets or enjoying a coffee with views of ancient ruins. For a taste of modern Athens, visit the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre or catch the sunset from Mount Lycabettus. Wrap up your day savouring traditional Greek cuisine at a rooftop restaurant with views of the illuminated Acropolis. One more suggestion for Athens: considering going in low-season, when fewer cruise ships are in port, and the weather is more temperate. Or if you go in high season, secure your guide by booking your tour early, and plan your more active exploration for the morning and evening. Lisbon Sitting astride seven hills and overlooking the majestic Rio Tejo, lies the exquisite city of Lisbon. Replete with centuries-old history, yet exuding a youthful vibe, the city is an absolutely delightful place to explore. The sights in Lisbon are plenty - from St Jerome Monastery to Belem Tower - and walking around its many enchanting neighbourhoods with your very own Portuguese guide is a wonderful way to discover the city. Take a bright yellow tram through the narrow cobbled streets of the Moorish Alfama quarter and enjoy lunch on a patio while listening to traditional Fado music. Shop the upscale boutiques in trendy Chiado, and take the steep funicular ride to the Bairro Alto for the city's best nightlife. And save time for a short day trip to Sintra! This colourful, magical place will imprint on your memory. We think local guide Ines sums up why you should come here perfectly: “Life is short and Lisbon is amazing. Great weather, great food, such welcoming people, vibrant cultural life, great cityscape, amazing nature around it...what else do we need in life?” Buenos Aires We have a big soft spot for Buenos Aires, as quite a few of the ToursByLocals staff team is based in the Argentinian capital. It’s the land of football and grand boulevards, empanadas and maté, tango and nightlife. The city bursts with grand colonial facades and colourful, crumbling buildings, living side by side. Distinct neighbourhoods all have their own flavour, and the local guides in Buenos Aires are excited to welcome you and share with you their favourite places. With a surge of travellers wanting to take bucket list trips to Antarctica, Buenos Aires is seeing more people including it as part of a larger trip to the tip of South America. We suggest timing your visit with the beautiful Jacaranda blooming season in November (late spring in the southern hemisphere). Knowing that many people are planning to travel to these international hot spots, you may wish to plan your visit there during low or shoulder season in 2025, or to consider branching out from the major cities to smaller, less touristed spots as a part of your vacation plans.

The Year That Was Travel in 2024

Every year, as the calendar winds down, we dive into our bookings data to uncover a treasure trove of fun insights about the year that’s just passed. How many travellers explored the world with us? Which tours topped the charts? What destinations were the must-visit hotspots? And what trends might shake things up next year? Sure, this data helps us plan for the future, but it also gives us plenty of fascinating tidbits we can’t wait to share with you! And so, we present: ToursByLocals Travel Trivia: 2024 Edition! How many people went on tour in 2024? The pace of travel maintained its post-pandemic momentum, and we sent approximately 350,000 travellers on tour this year. And we’re expecting to hit a major milestone in 2025, when we reach 3 million total travellers served since our launch in 2008! How many brand new tours were created in 2024? The guides on ToursByLocals created 7811 brand new tour itineraries to book in 2024! And those don’t even include custom tour itineraries. From hiking through Patagonian forests and lakes in Bariloche, Argentina to a quiet backwater cruise in Kochi, India, that’s a whole lot of unique exploring for you to do! What percentage of tours were one-of-a-kind, customized tours? Did you know you can do that? While we have over 35,000 tour itineraries already created and ready to book on ToursByLocals, you can also tweak any of them or design your own! Just message any guide in advance and they’ll customize an itinerary to make it perfect for you. (And the official answer is 27.3% - up 2% from 2023!) What attractions were in the most demand in 2024? Like last year, heavy hitters like the Acropolis, The Louvre, and the Colosseum were in high demand, sometimes to the point of challenges in gaining admission. Local guides had to be on their game to secure tickets, as traveller numbers in Europe surged this summer. Also extremely popular were Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal, and the Alhambra in southern Spain. Lesson learned? Plan ahead and ask your guide to help you book tickets early! Expect to see Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris very busy in 2025, as it finally re-opens to the public five years after a devastating fire. Which guide gave the most tours in 2024? This is a pretty impressive category to lead. It means a lot of hours spent on foot, and also a lot of hours talking! By the end of the year, guides are definitely ready for a well-earned rest. For the first time ever, this category was won by a guide in Japan. Not only that, but the runner up is Japanese as well! They’ve both taken ToursByLocals travellers on close to 300 tours in 2024. Congratulations to Chia in Tokyo! Chia (who also goes by Justin) only delivered his first ToursByLocals tour in May of 2023. We’re impressed to see him go from a newbie that year to leading the pack in 2024! Chia's also a world traveller himself, and has been to nearly 50 countries already. As your guide, Chia will introduce you to hidden corners, historical landmarks, and scenic spots that bring Tokyo and Kyoto’s history and culture to life. He’s also a foodie! In Chia’s own words: “Japan’s food scene is constantly evolving, and I’m always on the lookout for the latest flavours and traditional gems. I’ll guide you to some of the best local spots, from tucked-away eateries to popular favourites, so you can enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine as part of your journey.” Get ready to have a great time with Chia - but book early; we don’t think his calendar is going to slow down in 2025! And another big congratulations to our runner up Daisuke in Kyoto Daisuke (Dice) is a specialist in Kyoto, where his knowledge of Japanese history, culture, food and crafts makes him the perfect expert to immerse yourself in Kyoto. As a bonus, he’s also a high end mixologist and a professional photographer! Expect to leave your tours with the bonus of quality photographs to take home. Daisuke’s most recent traveller review sums up what many are saying about him: “I can’t say enough positive words to describe our two days with Dice. He is knowledgeable, thoughtful and respectful. My wife and I have had many tour guides over the years. Dice was the best. After two days I felt like we have a friend in Kyoto.” Which country sold the most tours in 2024? ToursByLocals has tours in 176 different countries. Who was the big winner this year? The top-selling country overall was perennial favourite Italy. By now, we have a feeling this nation might just be a permanent fixture in the top spot! The runners up? First off is Japan! Japan, which was one of the last countries to re-open its borders after the pandemic, burst back into the top 3 last year, and has moved into second place behind Italy this year for total number of tours sold. In third spot is sunny Spain, bolstered by the well-known popularity of destinations like Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Granada. Which city sold the most tours in 2024? The most popular city to book a tour in 2024 was Tokyo! This is the first time a city other than Paris or Rome has topped the list since we founded, 16 years ago! Hot on Tokyo’s heels was perennial favourite Rome! And the third city? No surprises here: Rome was followed closely by Paris, who was in the spotlight this year as the host to the 2024 Summer Olympics, and the long-awaited re-opening of Notre Dame this month. Between those three cities you can find over 280 amazing tour guides on the ToursByLocals platform! What was our top-selling non-European destination? Where were people going if they weren’t headed to Europe or Japan? Our three top-selling non-European destinations were the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Looking ahead… We don’t see travel to Europe slowing down anytime soon, but after a few summers in a row of blistering mid-summer heat, we anticipate the high season will continue to extend deeper into spring and fall, as travellers seek more moderate temperatures in months like April and October. We’re also anticipating a year of what we’re calling “detour” and “dupe” destinations, where people take the time to research and visit smaller, less busy places as an alternative to the traditional hot spots. We can’t wait to see how the year unfolds, and where you’re all going next.

Athens Acropolis

Insider Tips for your trip to Athens

Meet local guide Jenny in Athens! Born and raised in the Greek capital, she’s a true Athenian with a rich family history rooted in the ancient city, and a love of food, history and exploring. Planning a trip to Athens next year? Read on for Jenny's tips on what to see, do and eat when you arrive! What makes Athens such a great place to visit? Athens offers a unique blend of ancient history and vibrant modern culture. The city's dynamic character stems from its long history, dating back to the late Neolithic period (4th millennium BC), seamlessly merging historical landmarks like the Acropolis with a contemporary urban vibe. The nearby Athens Riviera, stretching from Piraeus to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, adds a beautiful coastal dimension to the city’s diverse appeal. When is the best time to visit? The ideal time to explore Athens is during spring, specifically from April to May, coinciding with the Easter season. With mild temperatures avoiding extreme heat or cold, visitors can enjoy the city with fewer crowds, allowing for relaxed exploration, museum visits, and unhurried photography. Summer tends to be hot and bustling, while winter offers fewer outdoor activities and reduced attraction hours. For budget-conscious travelers, November to March brings lower ticket prices, despite occasional rain or colder days. With over 200 days of sunshine each year, Athens really is welcoming year-round. What are the must-see sights every traveller should visit? The Acropolis is the top attraction, with its breathtaking marble monuments and panoramic views of the city. A stroll through Plaka, Monastiraki, Thissio, and Psyrri immerses travellers in a perfect mix of ancient ruins and modern life, along with the flavors of Greek cuisine. Other highlights include the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympics were held in 1896, and the National Archaeological Museum, which houses an extensive collection of Greek art from prehistoric to Roman times. Are there any off-the-beaten-track places you recommend after seeing the must-sees? After visiting the Acropolis and other main highlights, I suggest exploring the Athens Riviera, the beautiful seaside area of the city. A food and street art tour in Monastiraki, Psyrri, and Metaxourgeio—always with a licensed tour guide—provides an authentic glimpse into local urban life. Art lovers shouldn’t miss the National Gallery or the National Glyptotheque, which feature 19th- to 21st-century paintings and sculptures respectively. The Benaki Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art, housed in historic mansions, also offer rich private collections showcasing Greek art. What typical Greek dishes should travellers try? Souvlaki is a must-try street food, even for vegetarians, with pita bread and tzatziki (a creamy garlic sauce). Other great options include oven-baked dishes like moussaka, pastitsio, and gemista. A Greek salad with fresh ingredients and extra virgin olive oil is essential. For breakfast, try koulouri (Greek bagel) or savory pies like spanakopita (spinach pie) and tyropita (cheese pie). My personal favorite is dakos, a traditional Cretan salad made with barley rusks, tomatoes, feta, olive oil, and oregano—a refreshing and flavourful choice. What’s your favorite tour to deliver? The Acropolis tour is my favorite. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s an awe-inspiring landmark that never ceases to amaze me, even after dozens of visits—I always discover something new, whether it’s a carving, inscription, or view. The grandeur of the site and its breathtaking 360-degree views always impress my guests. I love answering their questions and sharing my passion for Athens. Being born and raised here, I have a deep connection to the Acropolis, the city's "most precious jewel."
