Venice was in the past a very cosmopolitan city: being a city that lived on trade, it had always been tolerant and open-minded towards the communities of foreigners who lived here, that could follow their own religions and Faith without so many problems as they had in other cities. There are a lot of traces of the foreigners presence in Venice and different tours are possible. When the prosecution against the Jews started in many European Countries, a lot of families escaped to Venice. That's why, in 1516, the Senate of Venice decided to establish the "ghetto", both an instrument of control and protection over the many Jews living in Venice. The ghetto is today one of the most beautiful residential area of the city, with its typical shops, the Jewish baker, art galleries and good restaurants in the surroundings.
-Following the Jewish steps, we will explore the Rialto market, that in the past was the economical centre of the City; -We will cross the Grand Canal using the little traghetto, one of the most venetian way to cross a street; then, we will walk through the Cannaregio district, out of the most beaten areas of the city, to reach the Jewish Ghetto, the very first ghetto in the world. -Here, at the end of our tour, you will have the possibility to join one of the guided tours to visit the synagogues, to understand in depth the unique relations between Venice and the Jewish community. IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR PEOPLE TRAVELLING ON A CRUISE If you will be in Venice staying on a cruise ship or just in transit, unfortunately I can't get any booking from you. Unfortunately, cruise ships are not arriving anymore at the central Venice dock and you will be told about the final docking place just the day before your arrival, making impossibile to agree a precise schedule.
