A journey to the legends and myths of the Delphi oracle, the location where the humans communicated with God Apollo, and believed to be the "navel" of the world. The prophecies of whom influenced the ancient world in many aspects. One of the most exceptional locations of antiquity, its operation lasted more than 1000 years. The priestess of the oracle known as "Pythia" sat on a tripod over an opening in the earth, she was possessed by Apollo, and prophesied. The ancient Greeks consulted the Delphic oracle before all major events; important matters of public policy or personal affairs. Thus it (the Oracle) exerted considerable influence through out the Ancient Greek World. This tour is -in my opinion- ideal for those who like or are interested in mythology, history, driving through beautiful landscapes and great taste experiences!
A great day with a wonderful guide. We learned so much about Delphi and the Greek culture. Extra bonus was the great restaurant recommendation with a spectacular view. Just as important the safe journey there and back to Athens. No ‘fiddling” with a phone or taking cell phone calls while driving.
Philippe was fantastic! During our pre-trip planning he was responsive to my many inquiries and follow ups. He picked us up at the port in Piraeus (even a little early because we got of the boat early) and dropped us off at our hotel at the end of the tour! On our drive to Delphi he filled us in with information about Athen "Yesterday and Today." Just our luck when we stopped at a place for coffee we arrived just before 3 huge tour busses so we were able to order coffee and goodies with out a large crowd! We stopped off at a little village for a stroll through the street. He made sure we were connected with our tour guide who walked us through Ancient Delphi. She was also wonderful and worth the extra money... we didn't ask for a guide through the museum and we wished we had. Philippe was ready and waiting for us when we were finished and took us to a beautiful view for lunch!
We had a great day trip with Philippe! He was very communicative leading up to the tour and we had a great conversation on our drive out to Delphi from Athens. He gave us a lot of insight to the other places and towns we were passing and took us to a great spot for lunch after we had the chance to tour Delphi. He also has an in depth knowledge of Greek history and mythology--it was very cool to talk with him and have him as our guide!
Outstanding!! Philippe was professional and knowledgeable about both historic and modern Greece, and he gave such an educational narrative throughout the day — it felt like traveling with a fun professor! His instruction in how best to navigate Delphi were flawless, and we could see the benefits of his experience in the challenges others had without it. The taverna we stopped at post-Delphi was wonderful. Great food and wine. A highlight of our time in Athens. We thoroughly enjoyed our day with Philippe. He was equally polite, professional, yet engaging and funny. His commentary on our drive to Delphi was informative, he he was a very safe driver, all of which made for a very enjoyable day. - The tour starts with a 120-miles (180 Km) drive along the National Highway northwest of Athens. - We will pass Levadia and have a short stop at the picturesque village of Arachova. This mountainous village has become a popular destination for Athenians mainly during winter because of the ski resort. - In Delphi, you will see and visit the Castalia spring, the Temple of God Apollo, the Athenian Treasure, the intact Theatre and Ancient Stadium which held the "Pythian" Games, one of the four Panhellenic events. At the museum, you will admire the unique bronze statue of the Charioteer. - We will conclude our visit by tasting exceptional dishes and enjoying the view of the "Pleistos" valley and the Corinthian Gulf. A fest for all senses :) - Finally, with a relaxed drive and the sunset in the background, we will arrive back in Athens Please note this tour can be customised.
