Welcome to Amsterdam! My name is Silvan. Tour guide, artist, birdwatcher, family man. My ancestors were people of West-Frisia (currently the Dutch province of North Holland), denizens of the shores of Zuyderzee, sailors and traders in the Hansa region (the North and Baltic Seas). So yes, I'm local, but also global, having lived in the USA for several years. With ToursByLocals I offer a range of tours, some focused on birds, some on culture and history. The ever-present threat of flooding has forced the Dutch to become trailblazers in the field of civil engineering. The Amsterdam city center with its canals, as well as the reclaimed land of Beemster lake, are distinguished as UNESCO world heritage. The tiny but densely populated country of the Netherlands (colloquially "Holland") is an intricate patchwork where people and nature co-exist. Book a tour with me and share in my love for this land. We appreciated his thoughtfulness in making sure we saw different sights that were important to us, such as the beautiful Dahlia’s at Keukenhof gardens, a brief stop at the North Sea and lunch/visit to Haarlem. Highly recommend!

Silvan crafted a wonderful day that covered all the sights we wished to cover. From a view of the grower tulip fields, to an uncrowded entry to Keukenhof gardens, a scenic drive to Delft, an unexpected visit to a working windmill where we enjoyed a sandwich lunch with bred made from the milled grain, a taste of herring and a visit to a “leaning” church our day was...

I highly recommend having Silvan introduce you to the birds of Amsterdam. He took me on a three day tour, and I saw a tremendous number and variety of birds. The reason is that Silvan, a native of Amsterdam, knows where the birds are and how to find them. Silvan pointed out the calls of the local warblers, which are quite elusive so we did not pursue sightings. Then...
