We will leave to the typical countryside North of Amsterdam, where most of the land is 10-15ft below sea level, mostly reclaimed with the old windmills during the 17th century. We will walk in picturesque port town Monnickendam, where monks build a dam in the 15th century. Then we will drive trough the Beemster polder which was reclaimed in 1612 and is on the UNESCO world heritage list to the 400 year old windmills of the Schermer POLDER. ***Closed between Nov 1st and April 1st)*** Here everything is explained about our centuries long struggle against the water. Climb the steep stairs of the mill ! We will have lunch in beautiful old whalers town De Rijp, where the tour busses can't come !! After a look in the townhall from 1630, drive to Edam, nicknamed "Pearl of the South Sea" where we'll taste the famous cheese and take a walk before returning to Amsterdam.
Rene provided a tour that exactly met out needs. His vast knowledge of the Netherlands gave us a thorough insight into the countries history and people, and we saw many scenic and iconic sights north of Amsterdam while avoiding the crowds from the tour buses. Renes's friendly easy manner made the whole day very enjoyable. W felt this was exactly the tour we were hoping for.
We had a wonderful time with Rene! Our tour perfectly coincided with the peak of tulip season, which was stunning. Rene started our day at 9:00 AM, allowing us to stay ahead of the crowds at every stop. He is incredibly knowledgeable and shared fascinating insights into the history of the windmills. The countryside is absolutely beautiful, and the traditional Dutch lunch Rene arranged at a local restaurant was a highlight. This is a fantastic tour that I highly recommend!
Rene was an excellent guide. Arrived promptly on time in front of our hotel. Spent the entire day with Rene, very knowledgeable, friendly and patient. Took the time to understand our itinerary and helped us maximize a wonderful tour through the north end of Amsterdam and then back into center city. Would recommend a day with Rene if your are looking to explore Amsterdam.

We couldn't have asked for a more knowledgeable and personable guide than Rene, who drove us around the countryside north of Amsterdam on our port day between cruises. Walking through small villages, driving along dikes and in reclaimed land, having lunch in an historic restaurant and visiting a working windmill gave us a wonderful introduction to the Netherlands. There were even a few remaining fields of blooming tulips to see! We look forward to two more days of tours with Rene in upcoming weeks.
If you want to see Holland this is the trip for you. Rene has lived in Holland all his life and shares the beautiful small villages and hear the history of Holland, this is the tour for you, a throughly enjoyable tour.
