In parts of Holland bordering the North Sea, where bulb flowers like tulips are grown, the landscape looks like a colourful abstract painting in Spring. Keukenhof is an attractive park showcasing the wealth of flower cultivation. The city of Delft is famous for its painted "Delft Blue" ceramics. Visit the porcelain factory and admire the great church on the market square, burial place of "founding father" William the Silent. A popular tourist destination is Zaanse Schans. Here, several well-preserved windmills can be admired in action. Watch how sawing wood, grinding of grain and pigments was done a century ago. The city of Haarlem is a jewel along the river Spaarne, west of Amsterdam. Admire the medieval church on the market square, on whose great organ Mozart once played as a child. Enjoy quaint Monnickendam, a ship-building city during the Dutch Golden Age. Marken is a well-preserved fishing town and a popular tourist destination. We drive to the lighthouse and look out over the inland sea.
Design your own itinerary! Two or three destinations will fit in a full day of 8 hours. I recommend leaving room for a surprise visit to one of the lesser-known venues "where the locals go". Pick up and drop off at your Amsterdam accommodation, airport or cruise terminal.
