Hello! My name is Adriaan. I am an historian and an experienced tour guide in my hometown Amsterdam. Besides that I am a photographer who makes reportages on various hotspots in the world. Amsterdam is beautiful and Amsterdam is fantastic! Are you new, do you just want to explore the city or you didn't had time to read the brochures? Be my guest. It has a fascinating history, unalike many other European cities. Indeed, stories to tell. After my tour you see the city with different eyes. During our walk along iconic places I tell you in an understandable way (with Amsterdam humor) about the history and background of the city. The general history completed with anecdotes. When you visit the Rijksmuseum and/or make a boat tour along the canals afterwards you see the city differently. Master Degree in History (modern and contemporary history). Licensed and experienced guide living in the city centre of Amsterdam. Reportage photographer. For newspapers and NGO's I make stories in different hotspots in the world. - Most museums don't allow tour guides. I will guide towards the best museums! - Groups larger than 15 people are not allowed by the Amsterdam municipality. - I provide walking tours only. The city centre is small enough to have fantastic walks!

Adriaan was a great host and guide! We had a great and custom 3 hour tour around Amsterdam. We did the tour and first morning in town and saw a lot of sites and found the places we wanted to visit again. He gave us great tips for places to visit and eat. Our family is very interested in history and Adriaan gave us a ton of information and history that we were able to go back to during our week there. We would absolutely recommend a tour with Adriaan!

I discovered Tours by Locals quite by accident and first used them when my wife and I visited Paris for the first time and had our guide meet us at our hotel, which I thought would be easier as we spoke no French and we were not near the heart of the city. That tour was excellent as the guide came to our hotel and we spent 3 hours learning and seeing many sites throughout Paris. So when we visit other cities when we travel to Europe, we elect to have a local introduce us to our gateway location usually within 3 hours after landing & getting to our hotel. It has thus far worked out quite well - Paris, Basel & most recently in Amsterdam in June 2026 with Adriaan Backer who met us at our hotel. We had a wonderful 3-hour introduction to Amsterdam, taking in many of the historical & cultural sites throughout the city - Andriaan , who is a professional photographer has great knowledge of Amsterdam, both of its history and its many cultural sites. We learned much about the city and the Netherlands.
