To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art. Thank you for finding me; my name is Rob. I am all about food! I talk food, I think food, I dream food. I've studied wine, beers, spirits, and coffee. I've received the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and the Sommelier Wine and Food Pairing certificate, both with Merit. I've done many food and cooking workshops in the Netherlands and abroad. For example, oysters and chocolates in Holland, truffles and cheeses in France, pasta and dolce in Italy. I drive across the country just to buy the best produce, delicacies, and ingredients from artisan producers and small organic farmers. I also order 100-year-old Balsamic vinegar from Modena, Italy; craftsman-made soy sauces brewed in wooden barrels from Tokyo, Japan; and the best handmade chocolates in the world from Paris, France. But most of all, I enjoy tasting locally produced food and deciding which products I think are the best and most delicious. When I have a new find, I can't wait for family and friends to taste it, too. I am an experienced amateur chef. Every day I prepare a nice meal; sometimes luxurious, but most days just tasty with simple, healthy, and top-quality ingredients. I cut my own fries and make my own mayonnaise, which, in Holland, we put on the fries. When I don't cook, we like to visit the best restaurants in the country. We often visit Michelin-star restaurants and have traveled to many different countries just to eat in a Michelin *** restaurant. Did I tell you I am all about food? My wife Walda is an art historian and the number one ToursByLocals tour guide in the Netherlands. She has encouraged me for a long time to share my passion with travelers and to bring food tours on the ToursByLocals platform to the next level. Now that I have more time from June 1, 2022, I'm accepting her call to share my love of food with you! Holland has so much delicious food and many wonderful restaurants! Please let me share my expertise with you! Taste my country, it will enrich your stay tremendously! I have already enjoyed it so much to prepare my tours and try them out with friends. I know you will be thrilled too! Please contact me if you want to experience an exclusive culinary adventure in the Netherlands. I can customize every tour. The Jordaan is undoubtedly the most described, sung about, and romanticized city district in the Netherlands. Four hundred years ago, the neighborhood was built up with cottages for workers and craftsmen. They were often immigrants, looking for a better life. Only a few succeeded, the majority of the population lived almost continuously in poverty, in an overcrowded neighborhood, in mostly uninhabitable houses. Today the Jordaan is a trendy district. The picturesque canals and narrow streets are flanked by indie shops, cozy bars, and hip eateries. Walk with me through these typical Jordaan streets, and quiet, amazingly beautiful courtyards while we visit the best local shops for coffee, cheese, bread, seafood, typical Dutch cold cuts, patisserie, chocolates, and other candies. We will drink a beer in an authentic "Bruin café" (traditional Dutch bar), and relish the famous "bitterballen" (Dutch snack). We will end the tour with a tasting of different "jenevers" (Dutch gin) distilled in the Jordaan.
11 am meet at the first location or meet at your hotel; whichever you prefer. (ask me if you want to start from somewhere else). Make sure you only had a light breakfast! So much delicious food to try today! 11 am - 1 pm We will start with coffee and then walk through the Jordaan and stop at different locations for a tasting. Around 1 pm We will have a light seafood lunch. 2 - 4 pm we will resume our walk through the Jordaan and visit a few shops that will also satisfy your sweet tooth Around 4 pm we will visit an authentic "Bruin café" (traditional Dutch bar) and nibble "bitterballen"; a famous hot snack the Dutch serve all the time, in bars and at parties. Around 4:30 pm we will have a private tasting of "jenever" (Dutch gin) distilled in the Jordaan. The tasting will end around 5 pm. I can give you directions back to your hotel, or arrange a taxi for you (not included). Need changes in the itinerary? More or fewer hours? Don't enjoy seafood or beer? Please contact me for a custom-made tour.
