I was born in a small town near Amsterdam in 1967. My father took me on long boat trips through the surroundings of my hometown. At every bridge and village we went through he had a story to tell about its history and the people who lived there. He was the first tour guide in my life. Telling stories to other people is a gift. I inherited this gift from my father. In 1985 I moved to Amsterdam to study at the Amsterdam University and a whole new world opened up to me. There is no end to the stories to be told about this magnificent city at the Noordzee. Globalization, capitalism and modern society started in this small fisherman's town. In my tours I will tell the stories about the start of the modern world we live in today. The history of Amsterdam can be found in its city plan, architecture, food and mentality. We can walk for hours through the old city, drink coffee and eat apple pie in the shadow of De Oude Kerk. Biking around the old center and having a Dutch food tour at the Albert Cuijpmarket is another option. I'm an official tour guide at the Rijksmuseum and I can show you the highlights of the Dutch Golden Age. The remnants of Amsterdam's Jewish history is everywhere in the city and I can show you the monuments and tell the stories of the Holocaust. Outside of Amsterdam I can show you the beauty of my underwater country. For centuries the Dutch have been fighting the water successfully. This fight is a big part of our country's DNA and is petrified in dykes and windmills. Contact me and I'll share all my knowledge about Amsterdam and Holland with you. Greetings from Amsterdam and tot snel, Marten - Professional Tour Guide for 10 years - Historian - Official Tour Guide with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce - Official Tour Guide at the Rijksmuseum - Official Tour Guide at the Van Gogh Museum - Friend of the Rijksmuseum - I will drive you with my Volvo all around the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany

Overview of your Amsterdam tour

The Rijksmuseum is the treasury of the Dutch Golden Age. In the seventeenth century, something remarkable started happening in the "Low Countries". The local merchants invented a new religion, a new economic system and subsequently new forms of art and architecture. A city that for the first time since, would start a global empire: today's globalization actually started in the harbor of Amsterdam. In the Rijksmuseum, that story is told through a huge array of pieces of art. The genius of Rembrandt, Hals, Vermeer and many more are the focal point of this tour. This being said, these painters were building on an older tradition. This tour will their stories as well as those of how this small city became the first center of the entire world. I am a certified tour guide at the Rijksmuseum, so by booking this tour with me, you'd be able to skip the waiting line.

Marten was a wonderful guide who was both knowledgeable and a pleasure to be around. His knowledge of both the art and the history of the Netherlands was exactly what we needed to make this experience five stars. We would without question recommend him to anybody visiting the Rijksmuseum.

We met Martin at the Rijksmuseum and saw highlights of the Golden Era. His knowledge and perspective on the art were excellent. Rather than just looking at "light" and "strokes", we saw the times of the paintings and what the artist was trying to emphasize. Martin is energetic and easy to tour with.

What a wonderful time we had exploring the Rijksmuseum with Martin on a very warm day in May! With so much to see, we felt incredibly fortunate to have such a knowledgeable guide helping us make the most of the few hours we had. Martin was an excellent communicator both before and during the tour. He made meeting up easy—he was right on time, easy to spot, and fully prepared to guide us seamlessly into the museum, which is absolutely worth visiting. The tour itself was thoughtfully organized, allowing us to take in the highlights while also understanding the rich history behind the artwork. Martin struck the perfect balance between providing insightful context and keeping the pace comfortable, even in the heat. His enthusiasm and expertise truly brought the museum to life for us. We came away with a much deeper appreciation for the collection than we would have on our own. Highly recommend Martin to anyone looking to enhance their Rijksmuseum experience!
