Welcome to Amsterdam! My name is Silvan. Tour guide, artist, birdwatcher, family man. My ancestors were people of West-Frisia (currently the Dutch province of North Holland), denizens of the shores of Zuyderzee, sailors and traders in the Hansa region (the North and Baltic Seas). Come birding with me in Vondelpark, Amsterdam's "Central Park"! A surprising number of bird species can be found in the heart of the city. The White Stork is an eye catcher but seeing the Common Kingfisher requires a bit more luck. This tour is for novices as well as more seasoned birders who are looking for an introduction to European birds by an experienced local birder. I offer the use of spare binoculars for those who travel without. Vondelpark was created in the 19th century when a stretch of marshy farmland was transformed according to the flowing lines of the English landscape style. The park was named after the 17th century poet Joost van den Vondel whose statue takes up a prominent spot. The park also houses a modern bird sculpture by Picasso among other points of interest.
