Ciao I'm Francesca, welcome to my Toursbylocals Venice page. I was born in Sicily a beautiful island in Southern Italy where I lived for 20 years. I moved later on to Florence to attend university there where I graduated in Byzantine Archaeology. I completed my studies in Siena where I've got a master in Preservation of Cultural Heritage. In 2008 I moved to Venice where I fell in love with this unique city and I decided then to stay for ever! I became a tourist guide because I like people and impress them. I love to show my city and let visitors discover its many wonders. My tours are not just meant to provide knowledge on the art, history and architecture of Venice but they are a fun experience too. I'm not a teacher delivering a boring lecture but a friend ready to fulfil your curiosity. Don't worry, weird questions are allowed too! This tour will take you to a fantastic part of Venice, far from the busy spots. You will learn the history of the longest Jewish district of the world, inspiration for William Shakespeare too! After an introduction about this unique place (where does the strange "ghetto" name come from?) we'll wander around it, to discover how the every day was for Jewish people. A life full of oppositions: free to be Jews with their uses and their habits, but prisoners of an island every night, without possibility to escape. Then we visit the two Sephardi synagogues, decorated during the 17th century. Discover this unique place with an expert of this place, a Hebrew student too!
Let's start a fantastic journey in the oldest Jewish district of the world! -We'll discover stories, curiosities, and everyday life of the Venetian Ghetto. -We'll visit the two large squares where the synagogues were, one for every Jewish nation (Italian, German, Spanish, etc), some of them hidden inside of normal buildings. -We'll go to search where the old pawn shops were, the most important economic resource for Jews. -Following monuments and little tracks, we'll reconstruct the story of a centuries old community until its tragic end during the Deportation, as much as the heroic task of a single man, Giuseppe Jona. Then we'll visit the Sephardi synagogues, which incredibly survived the barbarism of World War two, with their original decoration of the 17th century. Contact me for customization
