Buongiorno! Nice to meet you! I am Abigail, a proud Italian with an English mother and Italian father. I am an Art History expert and I would love to share with you my passion for the two Italian cities I love the most, Venice and Rome! I have studied the history of art and painting in Venice during high school and then graduated with honours in Management of Cultural Tourism. I have always loved art together with travelling and discovering all aspects of culture. During my university career I experienced one year abroad with a scholarship in Spain and also took part in a prestigious internship with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, one of my favourite museums in town. Just after graduation I studied for my tour leader and tour guide licenses and then attended several art history courses in Rome and the UK. The Frari Basilica, after St. Mark's Basilica, is one of the most enchanting religious complexes in Venice, and one of Italy's most important Franciscan sites. Over the centuries the Basilica has been endowed with unique and priceless masterpieces by Titian, Bellini, Canova's apprentices and many others, that take the visitor on a journey through the history of art and devotion from the 13th to the 20th century. The veneration of Mary is a typical trait of Franciscan spirituality. It is for this reason that the Basilica's three most beautiful paintings are dedicated to her. The biggest is the altarpiece of the Assumption of the Virgin, painted by Titian, and defined by Canova as the most beautiful picture in the world. We were interested in visiting this church for its history and artwork. Abigail did an excellent job providing us with historical facts and relevant background about the church and its masterpieces. We highly recommend this tour with Abigail!
This basilica is a must see site if you are in the area and Abigail is the perfect guide for it. We did two tours with her, and she was very flexible in getting them done the same afternoon when our plans changed. Her English is flawless and probably better than mine. Her knowledge of the arts is incredible. She is an excellent instructor for a Philistine like me. This Franciscan basilica looks rather plain from the outside, but the interior is amazing and I enjoyed it far more than Saint Marks.
Abigail is a mine of information and we really enjoyed our tour of the Basilica Dei Frari with her. The paintings and monuments in this church are really special and her knowledge really added greatly to our enjoyment. She is a warm and engaging person and we would have no hesitation recommending this tour, particularly to lovers of Titian and Canova as well as return visitors to Venice.
