Tour and weaving or silkscreen printing demonstrations
« Débaroulage » (translation : « descent ») in the slope of Croix-Rousse hill to discover the wonderfull epic of silk in Lyon for the city used to be capital of silk production in the world for 3 centuries.
Together with your guide you will pass through the famous passageways « traboules » of the « canuts » (name of the silk workers in Lyon), the impressive « Cour des Voraces », the district of the silk traders with their very rich houses.
Interactive tour with manipulation of silk cocoons, fabrics, and explanations about the Jacquard loom
1 demonstration is included : silk weaving on a Jacquard loom OR silkscreen printing OR handmade painting on silk (45 min). Silkworm exhibition from march to october generaly.
- From Place de la Croix-Rousse to the Atelier of silk weaving.
- Descent through the slopes of Croix-Rousse hill (Place Colbert, rue Burdeau, rue des Capucins, rue Romarin) for a 1 hour tour.
- End of the tour in Place des Terreaux after or in Vieux-Lyon area according to the available atelier.
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: Place de la Croix-Rousse, by the statue of Jacquard in the middle of the square.
End location: Place des Terreaux or Vieux-Lyon metro station according to availabilities of ateliers.
Duration: 4 hours
One of the different ateliers might be not available during the slot of the tour, but we commit to do at least one of the 3 demonstrations, unless you expressly require in advance a specific atelier among the 3 usually available : silk weaving on Jacquard loom demonstration / silkscreen printing demonstration / handpainting on silk velvet demonstration.
Silkworm exhibition usually possible from april to october.

Alex was passionate about the Silk business of Lyon and gave a knowledgeable and fascinating account of life during the height of the industry. We went to a very old/historic weaver and also to a modern one, and walked the back streets hearing stories along the way. Very nice indeed.
