I was born in a small town near Amsterdam in 1967. My father took me on long boat trips through the surroundings of my hometown. At every bridge and village we went through he had a story to tell about its history and the people who lived there. He was the first tour guide in my life. Telling stories to other people is a gift. I inherited this gift from my father. In 1985 I moved to Amsterdam to study at the Amsterdam University and a whole new world opened up to me. There is no end to the stories to be told about this magnificent city at the Noordzee. Globalization, capitalism and modern society started in this small fisherman's town. In my tours I will tell the stories about the start of the modern world we live in today. The history of Amsterdam can be found in its city plan, architecture, food and mentality. We can walk for hours through the old city, drink coffee and eat apple pie in the shadow of De Oude Kerk. Biking around the old center and having a Dutch food tour at the Albert Cuijpmarket is another option. I'm an official tour guide at the Rijksmuseum and I can show you the highlights of the Dutch Golden Age. The remnants of Amsterdam's Jewish history is everywhere in the city and I can show you the monuments and tell the stories of the Holocaust. Outside of Amsterdam I can show you the beauty of my underwater country. For centuries the Dutch have been fighting the water successfully. This fight is a big part of our country's DNA and is petrified in dykes and windmills. Contact me and I'll share all my knowledge about Amsterdam and Holland with you. Greetings from Amsterdam and tot snel, Marten - Professional Tour Guide for 10 years - Historian - Official Tour Guide with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce - Official Tour Guide at the Rijksmuseum - Official Tour Guide at the Van Gogh Museum - Friend of the Rijksmuseum - I will drive you with my Volvo all around the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany

Nuenen had a profound influence on Vincent van Gogh. He lived there from 1883 to 1885 with his parents, and those years became crucial to his artistic development. In Nuenen, Van Gogh focused intensely on rural life. He drew and painted weavers, farm workers, cottages, and peasant families, trying to capture not only how they looked but also the hardship and dignity of their daily existence. The village gave him subjects, discipline, and a deeper understanding of ordinary life as worthy of art. During this period he produced hundreds of drawings, studies, and paintings, while developing the dark earth tones and strong contrasts that defined his early style. The most important work from these years was The Potato Eaters, in which he expressed the bond between people, labor, and the land. Nuenen also taught him how landscapes and village scenes could carry emotion. In many ways, it was there that Van Gogh found his own artistic voice.
I’ll pick you up in the lobby of your hotel and than in a 1.5 hour drive in my car we’ll arrive in Nuenen. We’ll start at the Van Gogh Village Museum with a coffee and Van Gogh cake. Than we’ll take a tour through the Van Gogh Village Museum. The museum gives an overview of his life and work in the village. Then we’ll walk through Nuenen to the places he painted or sketched. We’ll stop at the old rectory garden, the church at the center of town, and the watermill landscapes that inspired several works. We can take a small lunch near the park where statues of the Patoto Eaters and Vincent himself are located. We’ll drive back to Amsterdam through some quiet outskirts and fields that had such a profound impact on Vincent Van Gogh.
