Travel back in time to the most prosperous era in the history of Amsterdam, ‘The Golden Age’. During this period (roughly between the start of the Dutch Republic in 1588 and disaster year 1672), Amsterdam was a thriving center of commerce and culture. For almost 50 years from the early 1600s, the Dutch dominated the global maritime trade. Ships of the Dutch East Indian Company left the harbour of Amsterdam filled with gold and silver coins to set sail to the Far East for spices, tea, porcelain and silk. From the 1620s, the Dutch West Indian Company ships set sail to the West. Fortunes were made with the tobacco and coffee trade and with shipping slaves from the West African slave markets to plantations in South America. The city saw unprecedented development, expansion and wealth. Opulent mansions were built along canals by affluent merchants. Discover this remarkable period during a unique tour with a certified guide with an academic background, and learn about the fascinating history behind the Golden Age.
We start on Dam square, to marvel at the impressive former city hall which is now the Royal Palace. When it was built during the heydays of the Golden Age, it was called the 8th Wonder of the World. From here we walk straight into the 17th Century canal ring, where we visit elegant canals and a canal house of a wealthy merchant from the inside to enjoy the splendour of the interior. Then we proceed to the charming Nine streets area, and have a drink in a beautiful historic location before visiting the most opulent area of the canal ring; the glorious ‘Golden Bend’. After we pass by the antique streets area, we see the house of the mayor of Amsterdam, and the house of a former slave trader. We end our tour around the scenic Amstel river. This tour can be adjusted to your personal preferences.
