Hi my name is Hans and ever since I was a small boy, growing up in the east of the Netherlands, I have been fascinated by my country's history, landscape and culture. In 1996 I completed a PhD in European history at the University of Amsterdam and since then I have been leading tours through Amsterdam and the Netherlands. It has been a constant pleasure for me to show off the most beautiful spots of the Netherlands to new arrivals and reveal just some of its charms, secrets and unbelievable stories. Car and bus tours are all very well for getting around the Netherlands but it's only through walking that you can truly feel like you've fully experienced this truly unique country. My academic background has given me extensive knowledge of Europe's history and culture but my guiding experience has also included flower themed tours as well as waterland tours which explore the countryside of the Netherlands. I live in Amsterdam and can meet you at centrally located hotels or at a convenient landmark in Amsterdam, Rotterdam or The Hague. Overview of your Amsterdam tour
Old Holland and the Zaan region is a magnificent piece of perfectly preserved industrial heritage, and a visit here is like travelling back in time. An 8-hour tour is a perfect way to soak up all of this legacy. The Zaan region showcases the traditions The Netherlands first became famous for: windmill, clogs and cheese making. North of the Zaan region is "Beemster", a reclaimed land area, where we have lunch 4. 5 meters below sea level. Today electro pumps keep the area from flooding, but in the old days windmills were being used for. After our lunch we visit the 'Realm of a Thousand Islands': the inhabitants developed the morass into a fertile realm of islands by digging canals. At the oldest sail-through auction in the world, vegetables and fruit are transported on boats and auctioned as they were in the past. On this tour, you immerse yourself in history as I tell you the best stories and teach you all about the rich history of Old Holland
