I was born in a small town near Amsterdam in 1967. My father took me on long boat trips through the surroundings of my hometown. At every bridge and village we went through he had a story to tell about its history and the people who lived there. He was the first tour guide in my life. Telling stories to other people is a gift. I inherited this gift from my father. In 1985 I moved to Amsterdam to study at the Amsterdam University and a whole new world opened up to me. There is no end to the stories to be told about this magnificent city at the Noordzee. Globalization, capitalism and modern society started in this small fisherman's town. In my tours I will tell the stories about the start of the modern world we live in today. The history of Amsterdam can be found in its city plan, architecture, food and mentality. We can walk for hours through the old city, drink coffee and eat apple pie in the shadow of De Oude Kerk. Biking around the old center and having a Dutch food tour at the Albert Cuijpmarket is another option. I'm an official tour guide at the Rijksmuseum and I can show you the highlights of the Dutch Golden Age. The remnants of Amsterdam's Jewish history is everywhere in the city and I can show you the monuments and tell the stories of the Holocaust. Outside of Amsterdam I can show you the beauty of my underwater country. For centuries the Dutch have been fighting the water successfully. This fight is a big part of our country's DNA and is petrified in dykes and windmills. Contact me and I'll share all my knowledge about Amsterdam and Holland with you. Greetings from Amsterdam and tot snel, Marten - Professional Tour Guide for 10 years - Historian - Official Tour Guide with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce - Official Tour Guide at the Rijksmuseum - Official Tour Guide at the Van Gogh Museum - Friend of the Rijksmuseum - I will drive you with my Volvo all around the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany

On this tour we're going to find out more about the local food in Amsterdam. The best way of exploring is of course tasting the food! I will take you to one of the oldest markets in Amsterdam, The Albert Cuijpmarket. On our way to the market we will walk by the Rijksmuseum, for which I'm an official tour guide. We will then arrive in the Pijp area, which was constructed in the 2nd part of the 19th century. It was first built as a workers area, but after 1945 it slowly changed into a place of experimentation. The whole Pijp is now the most gentrified part of Amsterdam. Small restaurants, local shops and a huge coffee culture. In the middle of this vibrant neighbourhood is the Albert Cuijpmarket. It's the biggest open-air market in the Northern part of Europe. We'll walk across the market and visit the local shops and vendors to taste their fresh dutch food. The local fishstore from Volendam, the cheese vendor from Gouda, a small restaurant from Surinam and some more vendors will be a part of our tour.
-Our tour will start in front of the Cobra Cafe, next to Rijksmuseum. -We would then walk by the oldest swimming pool in Amsterdam; Zuiderbad. -We'd continue with a short walk towards the Pijp area, which was built in the 19th century, and in the last 20 years, it has become the vibrant centre of the new urban culture in Amsterdam. -In the centre of this area is the Albert Cuijpmarket. At this market, we will do some food tastings. -Firstly, we'll taste the best handmade stroopwafel of Amsterdam at the stroopwafel stall. -Secondly, we will taste kibbeling, herring and dutch shrimpsat the Volendam visshop. -Thirdly, we will taste poffertjes at the poffertjes stall. -Our 4th stop will be at the snackcar, to taste bitterballen. -Our 5th stop will be at Floris' cheese stall, for some artisanal cheese tasting. -Finally, we will end this tasty experience with barra and sate at the Surinam Warung. At the end, I can advice you on the best way to get back to your place of lodging. Customizable itinerary.
