Hello, I'm Jan. Welcome to Amsterdam and The Netherlands! I've graduated in public administration at Leiden University. I have a big passion for history since I was a teenager and developed a strong interest in European painting and it's history in the last 15 years. I've been doing tours in and around Amsterdam for over 13 years. After all these years I still discover new things in Amsterdam and find out new things about it's history, which makes it such a great place. I provide tours of Amsterdam, it's surroundings (flower fields in April, countryside, windmills, Brussels). I do tours on foot, on ordinary bikes, on my rickshaw, by minivan and if preferred so in combinations of walking and by boat or minivan. Amsterdam is great and unique. Besides the things most people associate with it, there is a lot else you might not have noticed before or read about. Of course I will customize tours. So if you have specific interests or you would like to combine elements of several tours please let me know and I will make a customized proposal. I'm a traveler myself. I have been traveling to the USA, India, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Mexico, Egypt, Russia, China and a lot of places in Europe. I'm always curious to discover new places and meet people from all over the world, which is a great advantage of my work. I hope you will enjoy our great, unique city! - 13 years experience with doing tours in and around Amsterdam, on foot, by bike, by rickshaw and by minivan. - I'm graduated in public administration at Leiden University - Licensed to do tours in the Red Light District - I can not provide tours of Anne Frank House, or provide tickets for it. - Taking pictures of women in the red light district is strictly prohibited

Overview of your Amsterdam tour

By taking this tour you will get a great overview of the economic, artistic, technical and social development of Amsterdam since the 1200's. We will pass by many historic artefacts like historic maps, paintings but as well elaborately decorated plates, glasses and maps of the most important trading routes and traded products which will help you to get to understand the history. We will focus especially on the period in which Amsterdam became the most important center of commerce and trade of Europe and on its highdays between the early 1600's and the second half of the 18th century. We will encounter many non-economic social aspects of life during these highdays like the organisation of the care for sick, elderly, and the poor, the way they tried to curb crime, the dealing with religious minorities and migrants as well as many depictions of the city and port these days. There are interesting video's about the 1960's, the policy to tolerate pott and the changing population in the last 50 years as well.

Your Amsterdam tour itinerary

- Pick up at the lobby of any hotel or rivercruiseship (as long as it dockes) in Central Amsterdam, The Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (Piet Heinkade 27, only pick-ups at this terminal for guests arriving by sea cruise ship!), all railway and subwaystations in Central amsterdam, any other agreed upon location in Central Amsterdam. - Transfer to the Museum of the history of Amsterdam (very Central Location, which makes it easy to combine with a boattour of the city, my tour by walking or my rickshawtour) - We will tour the museum with a focus on the highdays period and in case you prefer so the history of Amsterdam since the 60's - This tour can easily be combined with my 2, 5 hours tour of the historic center by walking, my bike tour of the center of Amsterdam, my tour to the large windmill complex north of Amsterdam and/or a boattour of the center. - In case you would like to return to your hotel I will take you back or make sure you find your way back either by taxi or public transportation.
