Hello, I'm Jan. Welcome to Amsterdam and The Netherlands! I've graduated in public administration at Leiden University. I have a big passion for history since I was a teenager and developed a strong interest in European painting and it's history in the last 15 years. I've been doing tours in and around Amsterdam for over 13 years. After all these years I still discover new things in Amsterdam and find out new things about it's history, which makes it such a great place. I provide tours of Amsterdam, it's surroundings (flower fields in April, countryside, windmills, Brussels). I do tours on foot, on ordinary bikes, on my rickshaw, by minivan and if preferred so in combinations of walking and by boat or minivan. Amsterdam is great and unique. Besides the things most people associate with it, there is a lot else you might not have noticed before or read about. Of course I will customize tours. So if you have specific interests or you would like to combine elements of several tours please let me know and I will make a customized proposal. I'm a traveler myself. I have been traveling to the USA, India, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Mexico, Egypt, Russia, China and a lot of places in Europe. I'm always curious to discover new places and meet people from all over the world, which is a great advantage of my work. I hope you will enjoy our great, unique city! - 13 years experience with doing tours in and around Amsterdam, on foot, by bike, by rickshaw and by minivan. - I'm graduated in public administration at Leiden University - Licensed to do tours in the Red Light District - I can not provide tours of Anne Frank House, or provide tickets for it. - Taking pictures of women in the red light district is strictly prohibited

In 2, 5 hours we pass by beautiful, characteristic 16th, 17th and 18th century buildings, a couple of the most important and scenic squaresand a historic courtyard dating back to the 1300's. Besides we get to see impressive collections of so-called gablestones at several places and some great canal views. Of course, I will give an overview of the history of Amsterdam, its growth as trading and shipping center, the development of its characteristic architecture, its more recent history and contemporary Amsterdam. Of course there is the option of a break halfway! I want you to get to feel this fabulous city. Of course, the tour could be customized to specific interests you have as long as it is possible within the 2, 5 hours of the tour. Feel free to ask all the questions you have, including the ones that you might consider improper.
The order in which we visit the points of interests depends on where we start. We will pass by many of the highlights of the very central part of the city: - The authentic medieval Begijnhof courtyard - Many monuments which are characteristic and typical for Amsterdam like House Riga, House Cognac, Bar in 't Aepjen - Several of the most scenic large squares (Nieuwmarkt, Rembrandtplein, Dam), - The scenic view on the Southern church tower - A couple of scenic large intersections of the major canals - Several collections of the centuries-old gablestones which reflect a lot of history. All with a lot of explanation of the background of course. I customize the tour to your specific interests.
