Hi, I am Femke and I have lived in Amsterdam for 33 years now! When I started studying here, I fell in love with the relaxed atmosphere, freedom and inspiration this tiny metropolis provides. During my whole life, studies, career and family life was and still is based here. So, as you can imagine, I have a lot of stories about Amsterdam: personal ones, but of course also about the amazing history of this city. As a theatre maker, former journalist, illustrator and history student, my favorite hobby is to talk with visitors about the past. Therefore, I started working in several musea and gained a lot of experience. When you meet me, we will speak about everything from the immense wealth in the 17th Century, to the canals, the freedom and tolerance, jewish culture, World War II, the resistance but also the Amsterdam Pride. We will get to see several medieval buildings, canal houses, churches, synagoges, canal bridges and a palace! Join me exploring the beauty of Amsterdam! Official Dutch Teacher's Degree Degree in Cultural History (Open University, Amsterdam) Former Professional Journalist Experience working in different Museums I am not a driver. I can accompany you in your vehicle or I can arrange for a separate car and driver. I am not permitted to guide in the Russian language - only English. I do not have a license to give tours inside the Hermitage Museum

Femke was my guide for the day in the Van Gogh Museum. She was such a treasure on the history and life of Van Gogh. I enjoyed studying Van Gogh's paintings with her, the different strokes of the brush throughout his life, the early days before the explosion of color and Impressionism and the importance of each of his self portraits. I could not ask for a more delightful...

Dear Vicki, I only read your comment just now. Thank you so much for taking that trouble and your kind words! I feel grateful I was apparently able to contribute to make your trip even more memorable. Hope your photo's turned out to be just as good! Kind regards, Femke
On day 3 of our touring with Femke: who knew she was so knowledgeable about art and cultural history? Femke secured tickets and escorted us so wisely through the Rijksmuseum and van Gogh Museum. She "curated" our visits so we learned about critical roles of major artists and their historic settings. The van Gogh Museum was especially moving, learning about the artist's 10...

Thank you for the kind remarks! Visiting with the Rijks and Van Gogh is each time a wonderful experience (also outside work) but this day I felt especially grateful to be able to share Vincents moving story with you.
See earlier comments. Femke has great sensitivity to the WWII history in the Netherlands and took us to important sites where critical decisions were made, and gave us context. She has terrific knowledge of history and current events in Amsterdam.

Thank you! World War II in Amsterdam is stil a such important period that it is much debated, and even more so over the years. I feel grateful that you took so much interest.
Femke is a delight and a superb guide. She knows Amsterdam deeply and brings a historian's perspective to so much of the history in this city. Femke shares a narrative, not simply a list of facts and stories (she has both of the latter but it's always providing insight to the bigger picture). She responds with insight and humor to our questions. We spent 13 hours with her...
