I’m Brandon, a born-and-raised Philly local who built a civic association pro-bono project while I was in my Masters program. After about 1,001 dog walks through my neighbourhood of Society Hill, I realized most tours were skipping the city’s most charming cobblestone streets and telling a Revolution story that felt more Boston than Philadelphia. So I mapped a “Philly Special” route that started at our oldest tavern, winding through Society Hill, and ending where the Declaration was first read at Independence Square. This route actually has the most picturesque photo opportunities of any tour offered in Philadelphia, with multiple colonial-coded areas to immortalize your trip that day and continue sharing afterwards. I’ve studied colonial history and city planning at Penn and Drexel, but don’t worry, I won't be delivering a facts-only lecture. On my tours, you’ll experience the Revolution through the people who actually lived it: printers, artisans, merchants, clergy, doctors, lawyers and builders, and I’ll connect the drama to the streets you’re standing on. And because you’re in Philly, you’ll also leave with the real local intel: from the best cheesesteaks to the coziest BYOBs and a few “not on the lists” spots you’ll want to revisit!

Philadelphia grew from a small colonial port into one of America’s great cities, and its buildings tell that story better than any textbook. On this walking experience, we’ll trace the city’s development from river to river, using architecture to understand how Philadelphia changed as the country grew. We’ll talk about how early colonial streets set the foundation, how industrial growth reshaped neighborhoods, and how major planning ideas like the City Beautiful movement influenced grand civic buildings, parks, and public spaces. Along the way, we’ll connect architectural styles to everyday life and explain why the city looks the way it does today. This experience is designed to feel more like a guided conversation than a lecture. It’s perfect for curious travelers, architecture fans, and anyone interested in how history, planning, and design shaped modern Philadelphia.
We’ll begin near the Delaware River, where Philadelphia first developed as a colonial port city. From there, we’ll walk west across the city, following an east-to-west route that reveals how Philadelphia expanded, matured, and reimagined itself over time. Our walk follows Spruce Street through the historic core of the city, with stops near Washington Square Park, City Hall, and Rittenhouse Square. Each area offers a different chapter in Philadelphia’s architectural story, from early residential streets to grand civic buildings shaped by industrial growth and City Beautiful–era thinking. We’ll look closely at how buildings, public squares, and street design reflect changing ideas about urban life and civic identity. The walk continues toward the Schuylkill River, finishing along the river trail near the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the iconic Rocky Steps, where the city’s historic fabric meets its monumental skyline.
