Settled in 1683 by a small group of Mennonites and Quaker families both lead by Francis Daniel Pastorius. The area would become the first permanent German settlement in the New World. Over it's existence it's boundaries have held the First Petition Against Slavery (1688), Battle of Germantown (1777), Northern plantations, President George Washington's Summer "White House" as well as a number of locations that speak towards black livelihood reaching as far back as the late 18th Century. ie Slave Floor at Stenton, Germantown High School, John S. Trower Catering, Black Writers Museum / Wister House Join me as we explore the various spaces and locals that have been overlooked but integral towards learning more about America's past.
