I am a retired U. S. History and Government teacher with over 30 years of experience on the high school and college levels. I hold Masters degrees in both those subject fields. In addition, I'm a certified tour guide who has led over 100 tours of the region since 2016. My specialties are the Independence Area, Center City, Ben Franklin Parkway and Museums, South Philadelphia and the Italian Market. I'm working on one or more African American tours and will gladly design one for you, if interested. As well, I'm deeply familiar with the surrounding area and could guide you on customized tours of Valley Forge, Lancaster and the Amish Country, Brandywine River region or out to Gettysburg, if you're that adventurous. A professional driver will convey us to sites beyond central Philadelphia. You will find me very well informed, friendly, humorous, interesting and engaging. I love to answer questions and banter with my customers. I'm highly attuned to your needs and will adjust my style and content to your background and interest level. I aim to provide the best experience possible so that you may come to know and love our wonderful region as I do, or at least enough to plan a return trip! I look forward to meeting you. We will hit as many high points as possible on our two hours tour of "America's most historic square mile. " Beginning at the Thomas Bond House, adjacent to Welcome Park, we will visit many sites that contributed to the birth of Pennsylvania and our nation, including the William Penn homesite, City Tavern, the new Bell park, First Bank of USA, Franklin Court and print shop (if open), Carpenter's Hall, Old City Hall/First Supreme Court, Independence Hall and Liberty Bell Pavilion. Topics to be explored include the multiple contributions of Benjamin Franklin, Quakerism and religion, political and economic growth, slavery and abolition, art, culture and the everyday lives of ordinary people. I am a retired high school and college history and government teacher with two MAs and 30 years of experience. As such, I have developed wisdom, a good sense of humor and don't take myself too seriously. I have many amusing anecdotes and love to answer questions.
The tour can be modified based on your interests and preferences. - See "Description" for a list of sites to be visited, in order.
