Explore Sonoma your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Sonoma tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Sonoma for every interest, including:

Food and Drink tours: Sip biodynamic wines in the caves at Benziger Family Winery in Glen Ellen, then compare your favourite single‑vineyard Pinot Noir at a Russian River Valley tasting room in Healdsburg. Your guide can add a picnic of Vella Cheese and fresh bread on Sonoma Plaza or a craft‑spirits tasting at Hanson of Sonoma.

Layover tours: Get picked up at Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport (STS) or your hotel and fit in two pre‑booked tastings at nearby Windsor or Santa Rosa wineries plus a short stroll around Sonoma Plaza, with on‑time drop‑off for your flight. Shorter layovers can focus on one estate tour and a farmstand stop at Andy’s Produce Market.

Nature and Wildlife tours: Walk beneath coast redwoods at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve and watch harbour seals from the overlook at Goat Rock Beach on the Sonoma Coast. Families often pair a guide‑led safari at Safari West near Santa Rosa with an easy birding loop at the Laguna de Santa Rosa.

The area around Sonoma Plaza is walkable, but vineyards, redwoods, and the coast are spread out and public transit is limited. You can book chauffeured tours or tours with private transportation for easy door‑to‑door travel.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Sonoma inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Sonoma

From Sonoma, it is easy to branch out to the coast, redwoods, and neighbouring valleys on relaxed day trips, and these tours make the most of your time between stops.

- Sonoma Coast and Bodega Bay: follow Highway 1 to sandy coves and sea cliffs, walk Doran or Goat Rock Beach, scan for harbour seals, and warm up with chowder in town; nice for ocean views, simple walks, and tidepooling, and your tour can time tides and fog windows.

- Point Reyes National Seashore: hike to the Cypress Tree Tunnel, look for tule elk on the Tomales Point trail, and take in lighthouse and dune scenery; good for hikers, wildlife spotters, and landscape photography, with your tour stitching together short trails and scenic stops.

- Napa Valley: roll past vineyards on the Silverado Trail, pause in Yountville or St. Helena for art, coffee, and tastings, and enjoy classic wine country scenery; solid if you like food and wine, and your tour can focus on small producers or iconic estates without rushing.

- Healdsburg and the Russian River: stroll the plaza, sample local bites, then head to Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve for a calm walk under towering trees or a shaded picnic; ideal for a slower day with short drives, and your tour uses back roads to avoid traffic.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Sonoma most travellers miss.
