To introduce myself I'll start telling you that I am a private guide that makes private tours of Mexico City and surrounding areas. Overview of your Mexico City tour

It's my personal recommendation to visit El Rosario instead of other sanctuaries, since is the biggest sanctuary of this kind of butterfly in Mexico, and with the largest colonies, it's ideal for a full day tour. Before starting to climb we can have a taste of the local cuisine I would suggest to get a cup of blackberries atole which is unique to the place. After the tour we can go to get famous local dish in Zitacuaro (carnitas). There's possibility of local vegetarian cuisine too There's an optional 2 days tour you can request. Altitudes on the trail start at 9800 ft (3000 mts) above the sea level and final altitudes on the trail can be up to 11800 ft (3600 mts) depending on the exact spot the butterflies choose that year, therefore is essential that for your own safety and health.

Carlos was a professional, knowledgeable and patient guide. He drove two of us to the El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary and provided education regarding the Monarch butterfly migration. He also shared his wisdom regarding local fruits, Mexican community law and the Teotihuacan pyramids and history. He was patient while answering our multiple questions about the Mexican culture. If you are passionate about butterflies and migration, El Rosario is an unforgettable experience! It is a long 3-4 hour drive, but enjoyable if you are interested in getting out of Mexico City and seeing the countryside - which we were. The hike up to the viewing point was quite strenuous, but fine if you take your time. Carlos is a very safe driver and we greatly enjoyed our day with him. He is very knowledgeable about Mexico in general, and the El Rosario Sanctuary and the migration in particular. He struck a perfect balance between engaging us and answering all our questions, and being quiet and respectful when the situation called for it. He was very amenable to our requests - eg when to stop for a break, how much time we wanted to spend with the butterflies. Thanks for a great day, Carlos!

Amazing tour. Carlos is an excellent guide and driver. Very knowledgeable about butterflies and many other things about Mexican culture, art and history. The car ride was long but comfortable. We did not feel rushed at the sanctuary. So many butterflies flying around and in clusters in the trees.

We had an amazing day with Carlos! Seeing the culminating point of the Monarch migration had been a lifelong dream, and it was beyond incredible. It wouldn't have happened without Carlos. The drive was filled with deep history about Mesoamerican religion and culture, and the most up to date anthological, archeological discoveries. A MUST if you are in CDMX during migration season.

Your Mexico City tour itinerary

• From Mexico City to El Rosario Butterfly sanctuary in Michoacan State is up to 4 hours driving there. It can also be up to 4 hours driving back to Mexico City. • At our arrival we can make a stop on one of the local places for you to take some breakfast and then on our climb to the sanctuary, we will be talking with the help of a local, what the situation of that particular season is on the butterflies sanctuary, local beliefs and of course scientific knowledge about the migration. DO NOT BOOK THE TOUR IF YOU HAVE CONDITIONS LIKE THE FOLLOWING: Heart disease/problems Knees or feet operation/injuries Blood pressure problems Pregnancy Any condition that could affect your ability to climb steps/going down It is a good idea for high quality photos to bring a camera with a telephoto.
