Explore Morelia your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Morelia tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Morelia for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: In season, travel to El Rosario or Sierra Chincua to watch monarch butterflies cluster by the millions, with timed breaks to protect the colonies. Outside the season, explore Lake Pátzcuaro’s reeds by boat and look for herons and grebes.

Food and Drink tours: Sample gazpacho moreliano from a beloved stand, taste uchepos and corundas in a family‑run fonda, and compare fruit sweets at Mercado de Dulces y Artesanías. Add a quick drive to Quiroga to choose your favourite carnitas cut right at the carving block.

Off The Beaten Path tours: Visit Santa Clara del Cobre to hammer a copper bowl with artisans using traditional forges, then try painting a catrina in Capula. Meet a Purépecha cook in Santa Fe de la Laguna for a home kitchen lesson and stories behind local ingredients.

Public transit and getting around: The historic core is walkable, but buses don’t reach craft towns or sanctuaries easily. Ask your guide about private transportation or book a chauffeured tour for village and countryside routes.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Morelia inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Morelia

From Morelia, you can branch out to nearby towns, lakes, and volcanic landscapes, and these day trips fit well as private tours that match your pace and interests.

- Pátzcuaro and Janitzio Island: You head to a highland lake ringed by Purépecha villages, browse the mercado around Pátzcuaro’s plazas, then cross to Janitzio by boat for views and street food, which suits you if you like living culture, simple lake dishes, and easy photo stops your tour can weave together.

- Tzintzuntzan: At the former Purépecha capital, the rounded yácatas pyramids sit above the lake and the ex‑convent adds quiet cloisters, so history fans get ruins, architecture, and craft stalls in one place, and your tour can spend more time on archaeology or local handiwork depending on what you enjoy.

- Santa Clara del Cobre: In this copper town, workshops ring with hammers shaping glowing metal, and you can watch pieces come to life, meet makers, and pick up a useful bowl or small art piece, which fits you if you like hands‑on craft stops and want your tour to focus on studios over shops.

- Paricutín Volcano and San Juan Parangaricutiro: Walk or ride from Angahuan across cooled lava to the half‑buried church and the volcano’s slopes, a rugged scene that draws hikers, photographers, and geology buffs, and your tour can plan an early start and steady route so you have time for the views without rushing.

- Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve (El Rosario or Sierra Chincua, season Nov to Mar): Trails climb through oyamel forest to quiet colonies that wake as the day warms, a gentle outing for nature lovers and families, and your tour can time the visit for peak activity and include breaks for altitude and simple snacks.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Morelia most travellers miss.
