Hello and bonjour! (Le français suit l'anglais. ) My name is Yumi, and I'm a nationally licensed tour guide and interpreter based in Tokyo, Japan. I've guided tourists from overseas since 2009 throughout Japan, especially in the Kanto region, including trips around the Greater Tokyo Area (such as Kamakura), Mt. Fuji, Hakone National Park and the Nikko UNESCO World Heritage Site. I was born and raised on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands, and I lived in the Kansai area (Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe) for five years. I take you my neighborhood where there are many off the beaten paths, so as to see Tokyo people's daily life in their neighborhoods. Shimokitazawa is the Tokyo suburb you need to get to know. This once farming suburb has gone through a number of reinventions in the past few decades and shows no sign of slowing down. Located only a few stops from the heart of Tokyo, this pocket of Setagaya Ward is a local favourite. You can be traced back to the 1970's and 80's. The Kichijoji area often tops Tokyo's most-desirable-place-to-live list, primarily because vast and lovely Inokashira Park is just minutes away from Kichijoji Station, and Shibuya and Shinjuku are both relatively close. Head out here for a day of relaxing recreation on boats and under trees, followed by an evening of authentic Japanese food and drink as you tour the standing bars of Harmonica Yokocho Alley.
A very enjoyable tour for those looking for a different and quieter experience in some lesser known neighbourhoods of Tokyo, away from the crowds. Fascinating conversation with Yumi during the tour including her perspectives on modern Japan.
We had a wonderful tour with Yumi. She was knowledgeable, helpful and accommodating. We especially liked the "off the beaten path" itinerary because it gave us the opportunity to see parts of Tokyo that most visitors don't get to enjoy. We highly recommend Yumi.

The only concern I had about the tour is the title; it is inaccurate to call it a Food tour. Although we did stop at a great Izakaya for Yakitore and other delights. But it is accurate that she took me 'Off the beaten path' to some degree. I went to a local neighborhood and a famous park that many tourists might not ever see.
