Turnagain Arm Private Full Day Tour

A favorite destination with both locals and visitors alike, Turnagain Arm is a constantly changing body of water that hosts multiple species of fish as well as marine mammals. Huge tidal swings of up to 38 feet twice a day brings a wave of water crashing over the extensive mudflats, which we may witness up close yet safely so. With the tides come pods of hungry, white Beluga whales that chase schools of salmon and smelt along the shoreline and into river mouths. Seals and sea lions may also be spotted. Additionally, groups of bald eagle frequent the arm, but perhaps especially so in spring and early summer as they sit on the mudflats gorging on fish. Both brown and black bear are occasionally seen in the area. Dall sheep are observed year-round, grazing the mountainsides next to the highway and sometimes even come down to the shoulder of the roadway for perfect close-up pictures. In season (primarily August), wild berries dot the surrounding landscape and makes for a great, healthy snack.

Flexibility is the key! * Pick-up at site of your choice (Hotel, airport, dock, etc. ) * Drive south along the Seward Highway, a nationally recognized scenic byway, skirting Turnagain Arm * Stop at select points to view scenery, bore tides, Dall sheep, Beluga whales, and/or eagles if available * Stop at Windy Corner/Rainbow Mountain for opportunity to see Dall sheep and pick fresh berries * Watch anglers fishing for salmon or dip netting for smelt * Stop at Bird Point for interpretive information on area history and geology; very scenic spot * Sweep by Girdwood township for a visit, a ski community of world-class standard * If time allows and appetite calls, stop at local cafe or restaurant for a meal before returning to Anchorage * Drop-off at site of your choice (Hotel, airport, dock, etc.
