Having lived in Anchorage, Alaska, for some 45 years and being a small-business owner for decades, I have traveled worldwide extensively as well as throughout the state of Alaska. Was born and raised and lived for many years in both Norway and Sweden before moving to Alaska. Overview of your Anchorage tour

Visit this gold mining operation dating back to at least 1897 and now presented as Independence Mine State Historic Park. Situated in an absolutely idyllic part of the Talkeetna Mountains minutes from Hatcher Pass north of the city of Palmer off the Glenn Highway, the mine is a popular attraction due to its historic roots of Alaska and the relatively good condition of the buildings on site. Although there is obvious marks of deterioration of the wooden structures, it only adds to the rustic yet mystic feel of the mine and perfect motives for picture taking. In fact, this is also a popular destination among individuals seeking paranormal activities associated with the site. There are active mining claims nearby, up around the Fishhook area, lending additional credibility to gold still being a viable target in these parts. Aside from the mine, the parts leading up to the highlands of Hatcher Pass are among the most beautiful and stunning drives in the state, in addition to being a hot spot for blueberries.

Excellent tour, highly recommended. We were able to get through the Hatcher Pass, see Summit lake, and travel a few miles more before the road became too slick. The mountain and valley views were literally breathtaking [both literally and figuratively]. The Independence Gold Mine offered a unique perspective into Alaska history, and some short hikes for the physically active. Gunnar was extremely knowledgeable, and he adjusted to tour to deal with my wheelchair limitations. He took us to a more remote area of Alaska that was well worth the trip - thanks!

Flexibility is the key! * Pick-up at site of your choice (Hotel, airport, dock, etc. ) * Drive north on Glenn Highway to town of Palmer, continue on Hatcher Pass Road * Stop at select places for photo opportunities of rushing river and jagged mountain tops * Visit Independence Mine, focal point of tour; developed visitor site, interpretive information available on historic value of the gold mine and area geology; very scenic place! * Continue on gravel portion of road to picturesque Summit Lake in Talkeetna Mountains * If time allows and appetite calls, stop at local cafe or restaurant for a meal before returning to Anchorage * Drop-off at site of your choice (Hotel, airport, dock, etc. )
