Having lived in Anchorage, Alaska, for some 45 years and being a small-business owner for decades, I have traveled worldwide extensively as well as throughout the state of Alaska. Was born and raised and lived for many years in both Norway and Sweden before moving to Alaska. Worked in the airline and travel industry for years and display a great joy and passion sharing information related to travel within the state, and possess patience and enthusiasm along with a good dose of positivity! Carved out by a gigantic river of ice millennia ago, Portage Valley today is part of the Chugach National Forest and home to populations of salmon and wildlife such as bears and moose. Numerous developed trails and trail spurs span the forested valley, providing easy day hikes to the area's lakes, ponds, and salmon spawning streams. Late summer and fall is the perfect time to observe the colorful display of these fish as they procreate the next generation as has been done for eons. Along with this activity comes the very real possibility of spotting (at a safe distance) both black and brown bear that prowl these waters looking for salmon to feast on. Small gatherings of bald eagle are a daily occurrence throughout the autumn months and into early winter (September-November). The valley is bordered by forest-clad mountains, complete with ice fields and bluish-green glaciers, making for a perfect Alaska-themed setting. The Portage Glacier can be viewed up close by boat for additional cost.
Picked up in a top-notch vehicle, which was even a back up for him. Did a tour around Anchorage then out into the wilderness we went. Saw a lot of wildlife, including a moose encounter. Saw the glaciers. Heard about history of Anchorage. Pleasant gentleman we enjoyed his company. Would highly recommend.
We had a wonderful full-day tour with Gunnar. He showed us so many special places that are beyond the typical tourist spots — from the rain forest to glaciers — and treated us to special wildlife sightings. Gunnar has a great depth and breadth of knowledge of Alaska’s history, culture, politics, and environment. We learned so much from him! He went above and beyond to include information that was of particular importance to us. We recommend Gunnar for anyone wanting an off-the-charts great tour. Gunnar did an amazing job! Very knowledgeable and kind. We were able to see some belugas while feeding on salmon, bald eagles, and 2 moose crossing the road. The mountains and glaciers were nothing less than spectacular! I recommend this tour and Gunnar as a guide very much.
This tour was highly personal and customized. Gunnar was knowledgeable and thoughtful in highlighting the beauty of Alaska. While we didn’t see wildlife (bear, moose), we saw plenty of evidence of it through tracks and trails, which was good enough for me! 😂. We got out and enjoyed hikes and did drivebys of unique places. Enjoyed the day seeing things we wouldn’t have seen otherwise outside the city of Anchorage. A lovely day of sightseeing and conversation.
