On this tour, we'll visit some of the most interesting castles and medieval towns in the province of Guadalajara, northeast of Madrid. We'll travel back to the Middle Ages and recreate the quest of El Cid Campeador on his way to conquer Valencia and many other historical facts. The Imón salines produced salt for centuries out of the water of Río Salado (salted river). At the Castle of Riba de Santiuste, we'll see a fossilized beach of the Triassic period (240 million years old). Atienza is a medieval town with several Romanic churches, and a castle situated on a natural stronghold and surrounded by thick walls. We can visit the church and two museums in two of the Romanic churches. The views from the castle are great. Sigüenza is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Spain. Its Romanic Cathedral is one the biggest of that time in Spain. The old fortress is now a National Parador (hotel). Staying a night at the Parador is an unforgettable experience (optional). The tour is customizable.
I will pick you up at an agreed meeting point in Madrid and drive you in a rented vehicle with the following itinerary: - Torija Castle. Bult in the XV century to control the road from Zaragoza to Toledo. - Jadraque Castle. El Cid Campeador was the master of the castle for one year on his way to Valencia. - Imón salines: salt has been extracted from the waters of the river since the Middles Ages and they are at almost 1, 000m. of altitude! The salt comes from the Upper Triassic, 210 million years ago. - Riba de Santiuste castle: situated upon a hill, it's a magic place. A fossilized beach (240 mill. years) at the bottom of the hill is worth a visit. - Palazuelos: the castle and the walls were built in the XV century. - Sigüenza is the pearl of this tour. Its magnificent Romanic Cathedral and Castle are extraordinary. Walking along its steep streets you'll recreate how the town was in the Middle Ages. The Main Square and other churches are superb. We'll drive back to Madrid. This itinerary is customizable
