Poblet Abbey, a Day tour to the heart of Catalunya and its history

The Abbey of Poblet has for me a special I was married in Poblet and so did my parents. Poblet is a place of national pride for the catalan nation as it is the royal pantheon of Aragon, and here were buried nobles and aristocrats for centuries. In fact the house of Castille built the Abbey of El Escorial a their royal pantheon as a copy of the royal abbey of Poblet.

It is the largest monastery on the Cistercian Route and the only one that maintains a community of monks. Chosen by the Count of Barcelona in the 12th century to establish the Cistercian community, it is an impressive architectural ensemble considered a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1991. It also enjoyed the protection of the sovereigns of the Catalan-Aragonese confederation for generations. : especially since Peter III the Ceremonious (1336-1387) made the monastery a royal pantheon.

On the banks of the river Gaià we find the monastery of Santes Creus, founded in 1160, which was the center of one of the most extensive and influential monastic lordships of the Crown of Aragon. The Nulles Wine Cathedral, 17 minutes from Santes Creus, is a 1917 modernist gem built by Gaudí's disciple specializing in modernist cooperatives, Cèsar Martinell I Brunet. The Monastery of Santa Maria d'Escaladei was founded in the 12th century by Alfonso the Chaste with French Carthusian monks who followed the order of Sant Bru de Colonia, and was the first Carthusian monastery in the Iberian Peninsula, from which the other Catalan Carthusians arose. . Its domains formed the historical territory of the Priorat.

A beautiful day-trip to the border with France, that starts with a lovely driving up north to the city of Figueres where we will visit the Theatre-Museum of Salvador Dali, and walk in the narrow streets of the old town: The church where he was baptised, his favourite restaurants, his house. . .

We will drive afterwards to the medieval capital of the area: Girona where we will stop for lunch in "Can Roca", the traditional & famous restaurant runned by the parents of the Roca brothers, owners of the neighbouring 3 michelin stars "Celler de Can Roca" restaurant. The mother is still the cook!!! (except on saturdays, when it is closed, then I have good alternatives)

After lunch we visit in Girona the surprisingly well kept jewish district, the call, with its awesome museum, the Bonastruç Ça Porta centre, the Cathedral and church of Sant Feliu.
