Hello! My name is Luis Paulo and I have been working as a Tour Guide for 20 years! I have a Bachelor's degree in tourism and a postgraduate degree in Tour Guiding completed in Lisbon. I am a certified guide and authorized to guide tourists in national monuments within Portugal. What attracts me most to this profession is being in contact with people from the most varied locations and outside of an office, in the open air! Having worked for many years in Brazil, I decided to make a life change and moved with my family to Portugal. Since my arrival I have been involved in the Tourism Sector and learned a lot about the Culture of this wonderful country! I am passionate about History and I feel privileged to be able to live in a country with such a fascinating past. In Lisbon, the most varied people passed and lived here (Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs), each of them leaving their mark in the history of this dynamic and cosmopolitan city. I will be delighted to share my knowledge, presenting a little more about the Culture, Gastronomy, History, Architecture, Arts, among other wonders that we can explore together. If you choose me as your local Guide, I can guarantee that I will do my best and it will be a pleasure to customize the tours to your preferences! The Jerónimos Monastery is known not only for its beautiful architecture, but for everything it represents for Portugal. It's no coincidence that it's one of the first places visited by illustrious people, including presidents and kings of other nations. It's a building that speaks about the historical moment in which it was built and is closely associated with a period of maritime and economic expansion that Portugal was experiencing. Considered by many experts to be the most beautiful monastery in the country, it's certainly an attraction that shouldn't be missed in Lisbon. On this approximately 1 hour and 30 minute visit, I will help you discover more about the secrets of this place and assist you in interpreting all the symbolism contained within.
We will enter this monument, using a priority queue, at 9:30 AM. We will begin the visit at the upper part of the cloister, where you can admire the rich details contained in the architecture of the late Gothic period, very fashionable in Portugal at the beginning of the 16th century. I will point out a series of interesting facts related to the symbolism of the building, closely associated with Christianity, but also with the Portuguese royal family, which controlled the country at the time of its construction. Afterwards, we will visit the ground floor of the building, the place where the monks spent most of their time and where we can see the confessionals, the refectory, and the chapter house. After visiting the monastery, we will now visit the Church, built alongside the cloister, which impresses with its monumentality and artistic finesse. A must-see in Lisbon and very enlightening for a better understanding of the Age of Navegations that Portugal went through between the XV and XVI centuries.
