I'm Gui (as all my friends call me), a 39-year-old local from Lisbon who loves his little corner of the world so much that I dream of making others fall in love with its cultural and historical richness. A student of Portuguese history, culture, literature, and language, I was only absent from my hometown for a year, when I decided to embraced the challenge of studying in Florence, Italy. Marveling at my country's historical and cultural connections with other countries and places around the world and over the centuries, I got lost in the labyrinth of all these intricate and constant tangents. Even today, instead of looking for a way out of them, I scrutinize every new and intriguing corner of this endless maze with the curiosity of a neophyte, aiming to call each of these new curious regions my home. I want you to discover all of my favorite places near Lisbon, in addition to Lisbon itself. From Sintra and its romantic mysticism to Cascais and its maritime voluptuousness, as well as Serra da Arrábida and its wild nature that hides corners that are both intoxicating and sacred. Then there's Óbidos and its medieval ambience, and Nazaré with its waves that crush forgotten legends & myths. We can't forget about Alcobaça and Batalha, with its Romanesque and Gothic monasteries, or about Tomar, once the capital of the Order of the Temple in Portugal. Queluz, Mafra and Ajuda and their magnanimous royal palaces are also worth mentioning, as well as the city-museum of Évora, also the best oasis for any desert. Join me on these journeys through Portugal's culture. From raw history, to cooked cuisine, scrambled architecture, tasteful music, a thousand textures literature and sweet, sour and spicy stories. Around 80M years ago, a mountain emerged from the Atlantic. Since then, that mountain was a prehistoric religious ground, was named Moon Hill by greek geographers, was part of the Moorish empire, and was finally conquered by the Portuguese, becoming the summer resort for Lisbon elites. At the turn of the 19th century, Sintra emerged as a tourist destination for people searching for a piece of Eden on Earth. In 1995, Unesco declared Sintra world heritage, turning it into the tourism phenomenon that still is today. Sintra is a must visit location in any trip to Lisbon, but is also kind of complicated to navigate smoothly through all the possibilities. That's why I'm here: to make everything easy for you! Being from Lisbon, since a young age I've been exploring the eerie wonders of Sintra, and now it's time for you to join me in this quest to fully understand this mystical and unique place in the world. Come with me, and I'll take you to Pena, Village Palace/Regaleira, and other beautiful places.
Amazing experience. Great knowledge and had awesome food recommendations.
One of the best tours ever!! Guilherme has a wealth of knowledge. As we delved into the history of each palace and avenues in Sintra!! He is very affable, respectful, and reliable. Guilherme will go the extra mile to make your historical adventure wonderful and exciting, as you explore the palaces and Sintra sites. Very educational and the stories he tells whether u stroll thru the village or serpentine thru the palaces. In addition, lunch was great and dessert Guilherme bought for us was delicious!!! Thank u so much for making our trip to Sintra a most memorable one!!!!
We had a fantastic day in Sintra with Gui and would absolutely book with him again. From the very beginning, everything was easy and enjoyable. Gui arrived early, was completely relaxed and flexible, and immediately made us feel like we were spending the day with a friend rather than being on a formal tour. What really set Gui apart was the depth of his knowledge. He has a degree in Portuguese Studies, and it showed throughout the day. His understanding of Portuguese history, culture, and even the language itself added so much richness to the experience. As we walked through Sintra, Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, and the wonderful Biester Palace (a fantastic off-the-beaten-path stop that we loved), he brought each place to life with stories, context, and fascinating historical detail. He also made the day incredibly fun. He walked with us everywhere, kept the pace comfortable and flexible, and never made the experience feel scripted or rushed. Lunch was another highlight. Gui introduced us to local Portuguese foods, helped us navigate the menu, and shared his knowledge of Portuguese wines, which made the meal feel like another part of the cultural experience rather than just a break in the day. Even our coffee stop was memorable because he knew exactly where to take us. The best compliment we can give is this: by the end of the day, it felt less like a guided tour and more like we had spent the day exploring with a knowledgeable, thoughtful, and genuinely enjoyable friend. Highly, highly recommended. — Ed & Jen
Gui was such a great guide with a love for his country. He was very quick to respond to any questions or requests we had. We wanted to spend more time at Quinta de Regaleira and he made that happen - giving us lots of information along the way. The local pastry stop in Sintra was an added surprise and the lunch on the spot at the beach was great! We needed to be back at our hotel at a certain time and that need was also met. You will enjoy your tour with him. :)
If you are lucky enough to book a tour with Gui, you’ll be so glad you did! My husband and I spent two days with Gui, with Sintra being the second of the two days. He customized our itinerary taking into account our feedback and it was absolutely perfect. His gift for storytelling expertly captured the politics, religion and culture of the 13th century through modern times. We feel a connection to Portugal that we will take with us when we leave this gorgeous country. 10/10. Highly recommend!!
Amazing Day!!!!!! Our guide Gui was awesome!!! He went over and above to make this a terrific day. He has a wealth of knowledge and it was clear he is passionate about sharing his knowledge of Sintra and the Lisbon area. We have used Tours by Locals many times, in multiple countries, and our guide on this tour, Gui, is our favorite. I would recommend this tour to everyone and most importantly I would book Gui as your guide, no matter what tour you do in the Lisbon area.
- The day will start at the front door of your accommodation site; - From there we'll drive to Pena Palace, one of the most visited monuments of Portugal (that's why we have to arrive there early); - After the visit to the Palace (around 2 hours), we'll park in the historical center, and dive into Sintra's Old Town; - We'll visit Quinta da Regaleira; - Have lunch there and have some free time to shop and explore; - In the afternoon there's still time for another venue of your choice between National SIntra Palace, Monserrate Palace and Park, Capuchos Convent, or Queluz Palace; - We'll end the tour right where we started, unless you want me to drop you off elsewhere, if it's convenient for you. * If you wish to keep the afternoon simple, we can drive to shore and have a late lunch with a wonderful view over the Atlantic Ocean, and relax a bit in a beautiful natural pool in the ocean.
