On this walking tour I invite you to come and join me on a trip through time and go back to the 15th century. 20% of Portuguese have Anusim names ( אֲנוּסִים refers to Jewish who were forced to abandon Judaism against their will) meaning that Lisbon has a big hidden Jewish legacy. Let's walk along Alfama and Baixa districts in order to better understand the Jewish heritage in the city. We'll cover the area where Jewish stores were, the former Jewries, Synagogue and cemetery. Not only we are going into this hard period of our history but also remember the dramatic time of the II WW. Along the downtown I'll show you Coffee-shops, Hotels and Restaurants where Jewish refugees used to spend their days waiting for a Visa or a boat ticket to escape Nazi Europe using neutral Portugal as a bridge from the Old to the New Continent.
We'll start by visiting the 1904 Shaare Tikvah sinagogue after which we'll start to walk towards the city center and end in Alfama, core of Lisbon city and site of the unique vestige of a Jewish district in town. Several stops are to be done and definitely a coffee and washroom break so that we can refresh ourselves. We'll proceed towards Rossio where the former Inquisitional Palace used to be and where the 1506 massacre memorial is. Then the central Train Station where refugees arrived by the hundreds in 1940 and then down the downtown (called Baixa) until the Praça do Comércio. We'll end in Alfama where I'll help you find the cab/Uber to get back to your accommodation. All walking is on cobblestoned streets but flat and easy to walk. NOTE that Lisbon was destroyed several times by earthquakes and fires, so there are no artifacts or old synagogues from the Medieval ages. Shaare Tikvah Synagogue receives visitors ONLY Tuesdays and Thursdays Morning or Monday and Wednesdays Afternoon.
Tell your guide which places matter to you, skip what doesn't, and tailor the experience for your group's needs. Not finding what you want? Message your guide to build something unique.
- Walking Tour - though Lisbon is hilly most of the tour is downhill. We'll cover a total of 2.1 miles.
