I was born in a small town near Amsterdam in 1967. My father took me on long boat trips through the surroundings of my hometown. At every bridge and village we went through he had a story to tell about its history and the people who lived there. He was the first tour guide in my life. Telling stories to other people is a gift. I inherited this gift from my father. In 1985 I moved to Amsterdam to study at the Amsterdam University and a whole new world opened up to me. There is no end to the stories to be told about this magnificent city at the Noordzee. Globalization, capitalism and modern society started in this small fisherman's town. In my tours I will tell the stories about the start of the modern world we live in today. The history of Amsterdam can be found in its city plan, architecture, food and mentality. We can walk for hours through the old city, drink coffee and eat apple pie in the shadow of De Oude Kerk. Biking around the old center and having a Dutch food tour at the Albert Cuijpmarket is another option. I'm an official tour guide at the Rijksmuseum and I can show you the highlights of the Dutch Golden Age. The remnants of Amsterdam's Jewish history is everywhere in the city and I can show you the monuments and tell the stories of the Holocaust. Outside of Amsterdam I can show you the beauty of my underwater country. For centuries the Dutch have been fighting the water successfully. This fight is a big part of our country's DNA and is petrified in dykes and windmills. Contact me and I'll share all my knowledge about Amsterdam and Holland with you. Greetings from Amsterdam and tot snel, Marten - Professional Tour Guide for 10 years - Historian - Official Tour Guide with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce - Official Tour Guide at the Rijksmuseum - Official Tour Guide at the Van Gogh Museum - Friend of the Rijksmuseum - I will drive you with my Volvo all around the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany

A scenic car tour through Waterland reveals the Netherlands at its most peaceful. Start from Amsterdam and drive north toward Broek in Waterland, a village of pastel wooden houses reflected in still canals. Continue to Monnickendam, where narrow streets, a historic weigh house, and a peaceful harbor showcase old Dutch charm. Follow winding dike roads to Marken, once an island, now linked by a causeway; explore its iconic green-painted houses and lighthouse. Then head to Volendam, famous for its lively harbor, traditional costumes, and fresh seafood stands. From here, a short drive brings you to Edam, home of quiet canals, cobbled lanes, and the renowned cheese market. Throughout the route, you’ll pass open fields, grazing sheep, shimmering wetlands, and wide skies—classic Waterland scenery. The trip is compact, easy to navigate, and perfect for enjoying rural Dutch life at a relaxed pace.
I will pick you up in the lobby of your hotel and we’ll drive with my luxurious Volvo to Waterland (15 minute ride) . We’ll start in Broek in Waterland, and stroll past pastel wooden houses and calm canals. Than we’ll to Monnickendam known for its historic harbor, Speeltoren (oldest belltower of the world). After our walk we’ll head to Marken via the dike road and it’s magnificent view of the IJsselmeer. We’ll wander to it’s preserved wooden white and green houses. Our last stop is Edam, famous for its medieval streets and cheese market. During the tour there is enough time for a lunch with local fish and coffee breaks.
