At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Groningen tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Groningen for every interest, including:

History tours: Climb or circle the Martinitoren, read rebuilding stories at the Grote Markt, and explore the Prinsenhof gardens and nearby hofjes with plaques that reveal city life over centuries. Include the Folkingestraat synagogue to understand local Jewish heritage on your tours.

Off The Beaten Path tours: Wander the former sugar factory grounds at the Suikerterrein for pop‑up studios and street art, then cycle canalside to colourful Reitdiephaven. Your guide can extend tours to Appingedam to see its hanging kitchens over the water.

Genealogy tours: Research at the Groninger Archieven, then head out to parish churches and cemeteries in villages like Loppersum or Middelstum to match records with names on stones. If your family connects to the old landowners, add a stop at a borg such as Menkemaborg.

The centre is easy to cover on foot and by bike, with frequent buses and trains. For terp villages, borgen, and multiple ancestral sites in one day, request a chauffeured tour or private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Groningen inside and out.
