Explore Friesland your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Friesland tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Friesland for every interest, including:

Genealogy tours: Start at Tresoar in Leeuwarden to pull baptism and marriage records, then visit village churches and cemeteries in your family’s dorp to read Frisian patronymics on headstones. Your guide can use the AlleFriezen database and arrange introductions at a local farmstead linked to your surname.

History tours: Step inside the working Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker, tour the UNESCO-listed Woudagemaal steam pumping station near Lemmer, and walk Harlingen’s harbour to see how trade shaped the region. Add Elfstedentocht landmarks in Sneek and Hindeloopen for skating lore woven into your tours.

Off The Beaten Path tours: Cycle quiet dike-top paths by Moddergat and Paesens, watch for seals and waders along the Wadden Sea, and climb the terp at Hegebeintum. Sail a traditional skûtsje on the lakes near Grou or pause in Lauwersmeer National Park bird hides when you want nature in your day.

Towns are linked by trains and buses, but rural routes can be infrequent and distances add up. Your guide can organise chauffeured tours or private transport—by car or boat—so you can reach archives, islands, and lakes on your schedule.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Friesland inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Friesland

From Friesland, you can branch out to nearby towns, islands, and nature spots for easy day trips, shaping your tour around cycling, heritage, and time on the water.

Ameland: Ride the ferry from Holwerd, then cycle smooth paths through dunes and low woodlands between quiet villages like Nes and Hollum, where a tall lighthouse, broad beaches, and seal‑spotting boats make a relaxed island circuit that suits wildlife fans, beach walkers, and anyone who wants clean sea air with low‑effort biking.

Sneek and IJsselmeer towns: Spend a day linking Sneek’s canals and the medieval Waterpoort with harbour stops in Hindeloopen or Stavoren, so you get maritime history, Frisian craft traditions, and lakeside views in one loop, and if you like photography, boats and gabled streets give you easy angles while cafés around the harbours keep the pace unhurried.

Lauwersmeer National Park: Follow dike roads to this former sea inlet turned wetland, where bird hides, flat trails, and boat options make it simple to focus on migratory birds and wide skies, and if you enjoy nature, your tour can lean into quiet shoreline walks, local ecology, and tide stories that shaped the coast.

Giethoorn: A short hop across the provincial line brings you to canals, thatched farmhouses, and narrow footbridges, and you can glide a whisper‑quiet boat along reed banks while choosing calmer routes away from the busiest lanes, which suits families, casual photographers, and anyone who prefers gentle movement and village scenery.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Friesland most travellers miss.
