Nice to meet you! My name is Monique, which is a French name, but my roots are very much in the Netherlands. My grandfather came from a family of famous tulip traders, and there’s even a tulip named after the family. I grew up close to Amsterdam and fell in love with the city as a child. I moved here 25 years ago and still don’t think I ever want to leave. With a background in journalism and creative writing, I’ve always had a broad interest and a love for stories. That’s also what I enjoy about guiding: sharing the interesting backstories, anecdotes and fascinating details that make Amsterdam and its history come alive. Whether you’re looking for a real understanding of Amsterdam’s history, art and culture, or simply want to discover the special spots in the city, all is possible. I’m full of stories and fun facts and can walk through the city (almost) blindfolded. The museums are a particular passion of mine. I know the collections of the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum very well, and after years of guiding there, they are still some of my favorite tours to give. Step with me into history of Amsterdam's Jewish community on this 3 hour walking tour. We'll explore the old Jewish Quarter, where you will hear about the life before, during and after WW2, and follow into the footsteps of Anne Frank. Learn about the start of a flourishing Jewish community in the 17th century. And get an understanding on how Amsterdam became a safe haven for Jewish people. I will also show you where the first round-ups happened in World War 2 during the Nazi occupation. And tell you how the city responded, like the dockworker presented in the monument. You will get a full view of what happened in Amsterdam during five years of war. After a break for coffee we will go to the centre of the city, with the National Monument and famous canals, leading to the Anne Frank House. If you would like to have tickets to the Anne Frank House included, please contact me for options before you book. Also if you would like to include a visit to the Portuguese Synagogue.
Monique is an experienced guide with a lot of knowledge. Her English is perfect, and the tour was well organized. The only thing that would have added to the experience would be if she were Jewish. She would have had better insight into the things we saw. However, that does not detract from tour itself. She really knows her stuff. Tours By Locals is great. She picked me up at the hotel promptly and the timing was perfect. The tours are pricey, but well worth it.

Monique is a wonderful host and guide with a wealth of knowledge about WW2 Amsterdam and the Jewish community in Amsterdam that she loves to share. She also gave us a great and complete overview of Anne Frank and her family. It all made for a very memorable day in Amsterdam. She also kindly obtained tickets for us for the Anne Frank House visit so that we would not miss it, and she adjusted the tour as we went along based on our preferences.
