Hi my name is Elke. As your personal driver and tour guide I offer unique excursions to the Dutch country side. All my excursions are carefully designed to provide the most authentic and genuine experience of the Dutch landscape as possible. I have been a citizen of Amsterdam for 20 years now and have always been exploring its inner and outer surroundings, on foot, by bike and by car. I have extensive knowledge of the many small back roads and villages. Often inaccessible by big touring cars and therefor still unknown to mass tourism and exploitation. My focus is on providing exclusive , off the beaten path, excursions featuring everything that is so characteristic for the Dutch landscape like polders, windmills, low horizons and big skies. Experience a land created below sealevel. I am a certified teacher for art and cultural history. Specialties: Off the beaten track excursions North of Amsterdam I am not a museum guide. Museums usually have their own guides.

Hesitant about mass tourism but eager to see all the highlights? This tour is perfect for you! In 4 to 5 hours, I’ll take you by private car along narrow dike roads to explore the breathtaking Dutch reclamations. We’ll visit a beautifully restored windmill and stop at De Rijp, a charming village with its historic town hall, wooden bridge, and centuries-old houses. Despite being part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, the oldest polder in the country (completed in 1612!) feels serene, with few tourists due to its remote location. Instead, you’ll encounter locals, peaceful meadows, and grazing herds. This signature tour is designed to offer a truly authentic experience of the Dutch countryside. Along the way, I’ll share fun stories, from quirky Dutch expressions to the meaning behind clog decorations. Available year-round, the itinerary may vary slightly in the off-season (November to March) to include alternative windmills or villages, depending on seasonal openings.
Great windmill tour
This was an outstanding tour of the side of Amsterdam/the Netherlands that the tourists rarely see. We were picked up our hotel and driven north of Amsterdam to see Windmills, small coastal towns and a great insight into how the land was reclaimed from the sea and became a breadbasket of Netherlanda. Complete with snacks, we walked through island towns, saw planned reclaimed land and had lunch in a wonderful local restaurant. A wonderful sunny day away from the crowds of Amsterdam.
We enjoyed an excellent day, courtesy of Elke. She developed an itinerary for us based on our input which completely satisfied our interests and timing. She has an encyclopedia-like knowledge which she is able to share in a manner akin to having a conversation with a friend rather than sound bites from a guide book. It was truly an outstanding day. Thank you!
elke was terrific. very knowledgeable and very easy to be with. i’d recommend her to everyone, and the tour as well. Amsterdam is great but seeing the countryside was the perfect counter balance.
Very good tour! We toured a working windmill and saw a wooden clog-making demonstration. Also toured a museum in a quaint town. Elke was very informative. We enjoyed our day!
Elke arrived on time and we set off for a lovely day in the countryside. She took us through several villages stopping at Edam and to a windmill which we were able to go inside. The drive was easy and the scenery picturesque. The history of the region was very interesting. This was a wonderful way to spend the day outside of the city and experience the countryside. It was a half day tour which I highly recommend.
Morning Pick-Up Pick-up from your hotel in Amsterdam. Drive north to the Island Polder, an area transformed from large lakes into unique farmland. Travel along narrow dike roads, passing picturesque villages. Visit a beautifully restored windmill from 1611 and explore its interior. Village of De Rijp Stroll through this charming village with a drawbridge, historic town hall, and wooden houses. Enjoy time for lunch and a relaxing walk. Beemster Region Optional are a visit to cheeseshop or a cheese/woondeshoe maker. Winter season variation Adjusted itinerary as some windmills are closed, but the tour remains equally enjoyable.
