Hello hello, my name is Ivar. I'm rather new on this site, but not new to tour guiding. I’m a Dutchman with an unusual connection to Amsterdam—I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, spent summers here in Amsterdam, and eventually moved back to the Netherlands for university. In the decade since I've moved home, I’ve made it my mission to discover my roots here and uncover the layers of history, culture, and contradictions that make this city so unique. By trade, I’m a writer, researcher, and creative strategist. I write anything: articles, copy, scripts, lyrics. My work as a researcher for a crime drama series (WIP) has taken me deep into Amsterdam’s past, from its countercultural heyday in the ‘60s and ‘70s to the rise of its underworld up until the ‘90s. I’ve spent time interviewing old hippies, former police officers, some legendary criminals and longtime locals to piece together a perspective on Amsterdam that most visitors never hear. But I don’t just study history. As you'll find out, I'm not so shy. I love meeting people, exchanging stories, and sharing insights that shift perspectives. Having traveled to many obscure places like Georgia, Ghana , São Tomé and Príncipe, and Colombia (amongst others), I know that the best experiences happen away from the usual tourist spots. The most rewarding moments come from seeing a place through the eyes of someone who truly knows it and doesn't sugarcoat it. That’s the kind of tour I aim to offer. Not just facts, but the full story: the good, the bad, and the unexpected. If you’re looking for a local who can give you a real sense of what life is like in the Netherlands, I’d love to show you around and bring you to the spots you would probably find so quickly. I'm a photographer too, so I'll bring my camera along the tour and snap some pics for you, which I'll be happy to share. My style of tours is flexible. Want to stop to shop? Be my guest. Fancy a drink? I'll toast to that. Feel like taking a break and enjoying some music? The pleasure is all mine. Along the way, I'm sure I can give you a whole lot of fascinating information that'll change the way you see Amsterdam.

[THIS IS A CUSTOMIZABLE TOUR] Amsterdam is full of local gems when it comes to places to dine, drink, shop, and enjoy life, but it's also full of tourist traps. I'll give you all the tips on how to spot and avoid these traps, and show you some of the lesser-known spots that can really enliven your experience here. Amsterdam, in particular, has a wonderful café culture if you know where to go. As we walk around I'll share historical stories and provide current context about Amsterdam so you can truly understand the streets you walk on. By the end of the tour, you'll know exactly where you want to go in this wonderful city. Note: This is a customizable tour. The best way to enhance the experience is to inform me in the checkout process what your interests are. Want to see the green side of Amsterdam? Looking for best cafés for beer culture? Care for an evening of jazz music? Want to try the best ethnic food? Whatever your interests may be, I can lead us to the areas where all the magic happens.
Depending on your interests, I'll customize the itinerary: Itinerary can include: --Local markets for art and street food --Lesser-known architectural gems, including hidden churches and funky houses --Cozy cafés and lively bars where life is enjoyed --The best parks for nature and people-watching :) --Intimate art spaces and fascinating smaller-scale museums (aka not the Rijksmuseum One drink included at cafe.
Tell your guide which places matter to you, skip what doesn't, and tailor the experience for your group's needs. Not finding what you want? Message your guide to build something unique.
This will be a walking tour, but we may make use of a tram or metro (the costs of which I can cover).
189 Spuistraat, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, 1012 VN, Netherlands
Cafe Schuim is an art cafe located on the Spuistraat in the center of Amsterdam, not far from the Rokin metro station. I'll be seated at one of the round, low-lying tables in the back right near the music booth. It's not a big cafe, you'll be able to spot me with ease.
