If you're a slow traveler who wants to get an indepth understanding of centuries of Mexican history, architecture and art, this tour is for you. At the grand central square, once part of the Aztec ceremonial center, I'll show you how the viceregal Spanish city was built on top. Nowadays the political center of the modern city and nation, I'll share anecdotes on Mexican daily life and society. At the Education Department, I'll give a pictorial overview of history through the impressive mural paintings of Diego Rivera, his first and biggest public project. Plunging into Merced neighborhood, I share stories on archbishops, printers, nuns, artists and mine owners, navigating a labyrinth of colourful, lively streets and curios shops, stunning street art and sleepy baroque churches. Fancy shopping malls catered luxury products to the happy few. On the 2nd day, we'll focus on the history of Mexican art and architecture, see how both the rich and the Chinese lived, and check out exotic foods.
Day 1, 7h: • Zócalo square and its historic buildings (2h) • late 19th century shopping malls or historic hospital, Mexico city museum (1. 5h) • Templo Mayor intro from rooftop terrace with refreshments (not incl. , 1h) • Moneda street and Merced folk shopping and street life (1. 5h) • Food market with mural paintings and street art (1h) Day 2, 7h: • Colonial and modern palaces: Casa de los Azulejos, Downtown, Valparaiso, Postal Palace, Fine Arts Palace (2h) • Alameda park and surroundings (Diego Rivera, Folk arts or Kaluz museum, 2h) • Traditional gourmet Market San Juan (1h) • Monument of the Revolution or Ciudadela crafts market (1h) This itinerary can be completely adapted to your interests, including more (or less) mural paintings, food samplings, museums, folk shops, church visits, etc. I foresee a 1h stop for food tastings or light lunch, and one short museum stop. Each day's itinerary can be shortened to 4 or 5h if wished. Transportation to downtown can be provided upon request.
