I am Edinburgh born bred and educated. I am passionate about Edinburgh and love showing it to people and revealing its hidden secrets. I have always been fascinated by history landscape and architecture. I gradually became aware of how crucially such culture has shaped our understanding and the world we live in. This led to a further MA later in life from Edinburgh University in History of Art and Architectural History. I have now just completed an MSc. in Architectural Conservation. I try to make my guiding informative but lighthearted, interesting and fun with many photo opportunities. I love meeting international people, have many overseas friends and often find guiding a mutual learning opportunity. I live in the city center and can meet you at central hotels or a convenient landmark for walking tours tailored to your own schedule and needs or interests. My Edinburgh driving tours are a very good way to orientate yourself and see highlights to explore later at your own pace. Edinburgh is surrounded by lovely countryside with so many interesting places that I love taking people to visit. I was brought up rambling round ancient castles and listening to stories of old. I have lived in Edinburgh all my life and know virtually every corner of it. I am a qualified tour guide and used to guiding in historic houses. I was often previously asked to lead tours in Edinburgh. I have taken many specialist courses on art, history and architecture related subjects in addition to four different university degrees. More importantly, I am eager to share these interests and show people fascinating places.

This tour combines hidden gems often bypassed by visitors to St Andrews. I will explain the context of the history and importance of St Andrews and Fife which extends well beyond golf. Pick up from Edinburgh hotel, brief driving tour of Edinburgh then drive over iconic Forth Bridges. Optional coastal route winding through picturesque "East Neuk" with ancient quaint harbour towns perched on the coast with a way of life that has continued for centuries. Possible lunch stop for seafood lunch opposite the harbour and fish market. On to St Andrews and visit the famous Royal and Ancient golf course. St Andrews was also the centre of religion in Scotland for 1000 years. Explore fifteenth century University, with its own museum. Visit ruined medieval Abbey and Bishops Castle with its turbulent and bloody history. Return to Edinburgh on faster inland route through Fife countryside.
We traveled with Toby through the area north of Edinburgh. Driving over the Forth Bridge, we stopped at Dumferline, Falkland Palace, St. Andrews, and the fishing villages of East Neuk. Toby has a very comfortable vehicle, and lots of great information about this area. We very much enjoyed our time with him.
Our time with Toby was fantastic! He has so much knowledge about Scotland and its history and is willing to share it. We had a wonderful time on our adventure into the St. Andrews and would highly recommend him to others. He knows all the out of the way places that some might overlook, and he is passionate about supporting local Scottish businesses which we totally appreciated. Had a fantastic day spent with Toby. Was prompt picking us up from the hotel in Edinburgh and was able to visit all the locations we wanted to see (even when my father wanted to veer off course). He was incredibly knowledgeable about the city and history of Edinburgh, St Andrews, and the surrounding areas. Thanks for introducing us to your lovely country.
Our group of five hired Toby to guide us to and through St Andrews from Edinburgh. We were in no way disappointed. Toby was sensitive to our desires, tailoring our trip to our interests and abilities. His knowledge of local history, geography, culture, and architecture was superb, his manner gentle, patient, and thoughtful. We left home knowing only about St Andrews’ prominence in the golf world, but Toby showed us that it is so much more, a beautiful city with a rich and colorful history in golf, religion, education, and more. We can only speak for Toby’s St Andrews tour, giving it our highest recommendation! We would definitely hire Toby again.
We had a nice tour with Toby to St. Andrews. He took us through some small towns along the way as well as the coastal route back to Edinburgh. He was knowledgeable about the city of Edinburgh and its architecture. He took us to various historical locations in St. Andrews and was very informative.
