I am Edinburgh born bred and educated. I am passionate about Edinburgh and love showing it to people and revealing its hidden secrets. I have always been fascinated by history landscape and architecture. I gradually became aware of how crucially such culture has shaped our understanding and the world we live in. This led to a further MA later in life from Edinburgh University in History of Art and Architectural History. I have now just completed an MSc. in Architectural Conservation. I try to make my guiding informative but lighthearted, interesting and fun with many photo opportunities. I love meeting international people, have many overseas friends and often find guiding a mutual learning opportunity. I live in the city center and can meet you at central hotels or a convenient landmark for walking tours tailored to your own schedule and needs or interests. My Edinburgh driving tours are a very good way to orientate yourself and see highlights to explore later at your own pace. Edinburgh is surrounded by lovely countryside with so many interesting places that I love taking people to visit. I was brought up rambling round ancient castles and listening to stories of old. I have lived in Edinburgh all my life and know virtually every corner of it. I am a qualified tour guide and used to guiding in historic houses. I was often previously asked to lead tours in Edinburgh. I have taken many specialist courses on art, history and architecture related subjects in addition to four different university degrees. More importantly, I am eager to share these interests and show people fascinating places.

Day trips or multi day tours customised to suit clients. These can be designed to maximise what can be seen avoiding main tourist routes. Ancient towns, cathedrals, castles, lochs, glens, mountains. Stops to take in stunning Highland scenery and optional visits to historic places. Below are just possible examples that could also be day trips from Edinburgh. North to Pitlochry, possible stop and picturesque Dunkeld with ancient Cathredal. Possible visit to Distillery. West with wonderful views down 4 lochs and Schiehallion Mountain, past ancient stones to Falls of Killin. Back to Edinburgh past lochs, Doune Castle and ancient town of Stirling with historically important commanding Castle. Drive North West past several lochs through unique scenery to dear little Highland port town of Oban. Along Loch Linne to Balachulish and through stunning Glen Coe back to Edinburgh past more lochs, castles, mountains etc.

My friend and I had a fantastic day trip to the highlands with Toby! We went to some of the most beautiful and peaceful places “off the beaten path”. Toby’s recommendations for our day matched our wishes so well and it made for a perfect day! Toby is caring and kind- like a day out with a good friend. We will definitely tour with Toby next time we visit Edinburgh!
Our time with Toby was fantastic! He has so much knowledge about Scotland and its history and is willing to share it. We had a wonderful time on our adventure into the Highlands and would highly recommend him to others. He knows all the out of the way places that some might overlook, and he is passionate about supporting local Scottish businesses which we totally appreciated. We spent three days altogether with Toby and each day was filled with adventure, sightseeing, conversation, laughter, and great food! Thank you Toby!

Toby was lovely and amazing! He took us on two different day tours outside of Edinburgh to the Highlands and Glasgow. He really maximized our time extremely well while showing us all the sites in his very comfortable SUV. He REALLY knows his architecture so if that is of interest then I HIGHLY recommend him as your tour guide. My parents and I had the trip of lifetime and really enjoyed our time with Toby. I would absolutely recommend him. THANK YOU TOBY for a really wonderful and memorable 2 days!
Toby Williams gave us an outstanding tour of his "hometown." As a result, we fell in love with Edinburgh! He is such an elegant gentleman who shows off his city with panache, finesse and historical context. As an architectural and art historian, his insights were of great interest to us. He made excellent suggestions and made sure all of our requests were met and questions answered. It was a wonderful experience!
