Explore Dorset your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Dorset tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Dorset for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: Walk the Jurassic Coast to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, or take a boat from Swanage to see seabirds near Old Harry Rocks. For quiet trails and deer, your guide can plan a morning at RSPB Arne or a lighthouse loop at Portland Bill.

History tours: Climb the ramparts of Maiden Castle, then continue to Corfe Castle for stories of sieges and a steam railway photo stop. Literary fans often add Hardy's Cottage to see the thatched home that shaped his Dorset novels.

Architecture tours: Compare medieval stonework at Sherborne Abbey with the Tudor wings of Sherborne Castle, and step inside when opening hours allow. You might also tour Poundbury's planned streets or visit Mapperton House for a classic manor-and-garden pairing.

Trains and buses link the towns, but many coves, hillforts, and houses sit far apart and are not practical on foot. Chauffeured tours with private transportation make it easy to combine coast and countryside in one day.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Dorset inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Dorset

Base yourself in Dorset, then line up easy day trips along the Jurassic Coast and inland villages with relaxed private tours.

Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove: A natural arch and a sheltered cove make a simple loop with big coastal views. Short cliff paths give you options for a quick walk or a longer ramble, good for photographers and casual hikers on the same tour.

Corfe Village and the Purbeck Ridge: Stone cottages and a hilltop skyline set the scene, while the ridge path offers wide views over heath and sea. Spend time in the village, then follow an easy track for fresh air without a long climb.

Lyme Regis and Charmouth: Fossil rich beaches, the Cobb harbour, and small shops keep the day varied. At low tide, your tour can include a simple fossil hunt on the sand, then a relaxed stroll along the seafront.

Old Harry Rocks and Studland Bay: Chalk stacks and a gentle headland walk put you right above bright water and birdlife. Add a swim on a calm day or stick to the cliff path, and the day stays flexible for families and walkers.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Dorset most travellers miss.
