When I show someone around Edinburgh, St Andrews or anywhere in Scotland I want them to feel like they are seeing it with a friend rather than a guide, as a result all my tours are fun and relaxed. There will be stories, a few laughs and as much history as interests you. Everyone wants different things so all my tours are tailored to suit your needs. As well as learning lots about Scotland past and present in an easy to understand manner, we may well end up going for tea, a whisky tasting and most importantly, getting to see spots other travelers don't get to see. Travel is something extremely important to me, it lured me away from a career in science in the UK and led me to working as a photographer for Lonely Planet, various guidebooks, magazines and newspapers. Being based in Tokyo for 11 years where I was lucky enough to travel extensively and see the world, but on visits back to Scotland with friends I found I loved nothing better than showing my own native land through the eyes of a local and this led me to moving back to Scotland and becoming a tour guide. Although I've loved all the jobs I have done previously, nothing gives me greater pleasure than what I do now as I'm lucky enough to have a job that allows me to wake up smiling every day as at the end of each day I've been lucky enough to introduce the best parts of my own country to people from all over the world. If you choose me, I'll do whatever I can to make sure you finish your day with an equally big smile and Scotland will always have a very fond place in your memories.

Overview of your Edinburgh tour

On this day trip we can take you away from the hustle and bustle of every day life, see some amazing sights and get you out into the fresh air so you can refresh and reset! I will take you to the places people can't go on the usual tourist bus trails. I will pick you up in Edinburgh at your hotel and then take you to Stirling where we can see the castle (from a distance or enter) and then head for some walks through the forests and up hills to get spectacular views from an old clan gathering point and even see the spot where Rob Roy was laid to rest. We can visit quaint villages, eat local food, take in a whisky distillery and hopefully see some Highland cows on this personalized tour to suit your style.

The trip to the Highlands with Will was outstanding. It was the highlight of our trip. His encyclopedic knowledge of the region and it's history is amazing. He curated wonderful stops at uncrowded places that were exactly what we were looking for. I highly recommend him.

Will R gave a fantastic tour, catered to our requests. After picking us up from our hotel, Will provided historic insight to the places we traveled. We stopped at Dean Village, a most scenic and beautiful village. The Kelpies were bigger than expected. A stop at the Falkirk Wheel was timely since it was moving a boat as we walked up. Will took us to see Stirling Castle and provided historic context. Lunch at Mhor Bread in Callander was delicious. We met Hamish, Honey and Baxter, 3 Highland cows, up close. Lastly, Will took us to a picturesque area, Loch Lubnaig, where families swam and had barbecues. Very peaceful! My group highly recommends Will R for an immersive experience. When we return to Edinburgh, we will hire him again!

My wife and I are very experienced travelers and use Tours by Locals almost every year. We had an excellent tour led by Will. He was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. He worked very hard to adjust the tour to our likes which made the day extremely enjoyable. He is a true professional guide and we would highly recommend him. Also for anyone wanting to visit a Scotish castle consider skipping the very crowded castle in Edinburgh for a beautiful much less crowded Stirling Castle.

Will not only knows the history of his country and has an amazing love and pride for it, but he is personable, professional and very funny! There were times when in telling the story of the history of the locale that I laughed out loud at Will's descriptions. Will truly enjoys his job and loves exposing visitors to his country. It was truly a pleasure spending the day with him and learning about all things Scotland. A great tour!

Don't miss this opportunity! Will has it all - the knowledge, sense of humor, natural story telling ability, and love of country of a native son - and years of experience guiding. He tailored our day to our interests, even giving us a crash course on Scottish whiskies! He furthered our understanding of Scottish history - and Scottish humor. We could cheerfully spend a week getting to know Scotland in depth with Will. We will be back!
