Explore York your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every York tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in York for every interest, including:

History tours: Trace Roman, Viking, and medieval stories as you walk the city walls, step inside York Minster’s nave, and climb Clifford’s Tower for views over the snickelways. You can add the JORVIK Viking Centre or a quiet stop at the Treasurer’s House to fit your interests.

Layover tours: Meet at York Station, stash your bags, and do a brisk loop of highlights like the Shambles, the Minster exterior, and Stonegate before a quick tea at Bettys. With a few more hours, your guide can time a short river cruise on the Ouse and get you back to your platform without stress.

Nature and Wildlife tours: Stroll the boardwalks at Askham Bog for birding and deer signs, or head to the North York Moors for heather views and a steam-rail photo stop at Goathland. In spring and autumn, birders can add RSPB Bempton Cliffs for gannets and puffins, traffic and daylight permitting.

The centre is very walkable and easy to navigate on foot, with trains and local buses for nearby sights. For day trips into the Moors or Dales, you can book chauffeured tours or ask your local guide about private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows York inside and out.
