Karzimierz use to be an independent town. Karzimierz soon became a center of Jewish community and Jewish community was growing fast. In 16th century it became the largest in Europe. At the beginning of 19th century Karzimerz was incorporated into Krakow. By 1939 the city was home to nearly 60. 000 Jews. During the communist rule was a forgotten place on Krakow's map. Actually Karzimierz is a tourist attraction with the seven large synagogues. It is the biggest such complex in Europe, comparable with the Jewish monuments in Prague.
